When I lived in Iowa, I found out they have "beggar's night" instead of trick or treat. This means each kid has to tell you a joke. Most of these jokes were terrible, but there's one I like to use from that night:

We were in Waukee (west of Des Moines, still a suburb though). Maybe it was just a Des Moines thing? "Trick or treat" and "thank you" are just so much more efficient.
