Primer is a low key IQ test. As far as I remember, the movie never cheated, so one's ability to understand the plot corresponds to how well they can suss through recursion. And how many levels of recursion one can understand without starting to get confused is a strong indicator of overall intelligence.

No movie with Van Damme is ever going to be on one of my top 10 lists. That would be akin to putting a movie up for "tops in its genre" that had Steven Seagal in it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the guy. I just haven't seen him in any movies that I would boast as one of my favorite in that genre. He's okay, I like karate/fight movies.

His more recent stuff is a lot more polished and dramatic. He's moved away from the "Make slightly different versions of Bloodsport" train and is actually displaying some acting talent. You can tell he went through a lot of pain falling out of the A-list and dealing with his drug issues.

He's not winning any Oscar's and his work definitely has a foreign movie feel to it (think "In Bruges"), but if you wrote him off as a karate guy, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by his "renaissance".
