How many here don’t use a smart phone?

submitted by TheOriginal1Icemonkey to AskGoats 1.9 yearsMay 28, 2023 18:14:45 ago (+7/-0)     (AskGoats)

I have a shitty flip phone and it’s mostly on silent and with a near dead battery.

You're really no worse for it.
I was forced to switch after they phased out 3G and I still use the new one the same.
And they're all so large and delicate now; my old one was good about only for text and dialing and withstood so much abuse over the years.

If you're gonna use cellphones, you should have one primary that you don't take out of the house, and a box full of secondary used phones, aged like ale, in a container, for six months minimum.

Pull one out. Activate it with cash and a spare sim card. Use it. Then lose it.

You kind of need to be autistic levels of paranoid to avoid being IDed on alt phones.

You kind of need to be autistic levels of paranoid to avoid being IDed on alt phones.

In practice you're not going to avoid being ID'd if you use a phone even more than once.

It's why you keep several groups. Every-day phones (home phone, work phone, travel phone).
Single-use phones. This prevents social-graph analysis as long as you stored them long enough after purchase, bought second hand, and paid with cash.
Single-link phones (phones you give to others. They're supposed to use these exclusively for 1-on-1 communication with you or others and only on specific schedules that are changed regularly).

Not everyone should have everyday phones, but everyone who has one or more everyday phones should also have single-use phones on hand.

Then lose it.

In a boating accident?

What stops a modern dumb phone from spying on you? How is that better than my rooted android with a firewall?

A faraday bag.

[ - ] Niggly_Puff 2 points 1.9 yearsMay 28, 2023 22:07:16 ago (+2/-0)

They use the same networks. Why does the bag care if you have a touch screen or not?

[ - ] TheYiddler 0 points 1.9 yearsMay 29, 2023 08:42:53 ago (+0/-0)

Smart phones have surveillance tools that work inside of a faraway bag. Storage to log microphone output, accelerometers to estimate position, and they also could use their processing power to condense information into reports for easier storage and transmission.

Dumb phones are capable of these to, but it's less likely they would put in the extra hardware only to hide it from the user.

Look up the Kyocera rugged flip phone. Those have a nice battery life.

[ - ] NeedleStack 2 points 1.9 yearsMay 28, 2023 19:06:17 ago (+2/-0)

I don't. It's a flip too but the battery lasts a long time. I'll DM you the model I have.

You did it now. Dogleg read that and now his neighbors have to clean up the mess you caused.

[ - ] Sector7 1 point 1.9 yearsMay 28, 2023 23:54:21 ago (+1/-0)

Froze here back in 92. I could hear the water running when I went to check on a friends house. Whole kitchen/diningroom/livingroom ceiling collapsed the same way. Was hanging down about 4 feet when I first walked in.

[ - ] Gowithit 0 points 1.9 yearsMay 29, 2023 10:20:07 ago (+0/-0)

I don't feel it's fair to judge not knowing the freezing rules in California.

I hope he got a refund for not having that amazing weather you guys pay for.

[ - ] Sector7 0 points 1.9 yearsMay 30, 2023 11:56:21 ago (+0/-0)

Well, they only guarantee 99.99% uptime, so... But we did used to have 5 to 10 days of 70F or above in January. Zero this past winter, maybe one the previous winter, as it's been trending down for the past few decades. Could be a deal breaker if the average summer temp goes up from 76F too.

May be warmer if you go closer to LA, but then you'd be closer to LA. We're pretty fucked either way, as the second fastest growing city in the US.

I use GrapheneOS, btw.

[ - ] VitaminSieg 0 points 1.9 yearsMay 29, 2023 01:14:27 ago (+0/-0)

Is good? I'm developing the balls to wipe my phone and start over with graphene.

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 1.9 yearsMay 29, 2023 02:09:40 ago (+0/-0)

Everything just works. Except android auto, that doesn't work.

Been on Graphene for a year and its fine. Miss the hold power to flashlight function from Lineage though. Made a shake torch action with tasker but it turns on sometimes when I don't want.

Just make a seedvault backup. And export your TOTP keys.

You realize that app requires unlock of phone, then to launch the app, then to click the power button? This is two more steps than using built in function. No app can make torch work with power button while screen locked without using root or xposed or something like that.

[ - ] KyleIsThisTall 0 points 1.9 yearsJun 2, 2023 13:11:19 ago (+0/-0)

No it doesn't you fucking retard. You can bind the app to a multiple keypress of the power button while locked. You can even set the time between presses. I have mine set to 3 presses 0.5 seconds apart.

You absolute fucking retard. Shut the fuck up when you have no fucking idea what the fuck you are talking about.

No wonder you can't fucking work a flashlight on a cellphone. How fucking retarded do you have to be to not know anything???

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 1.9 yearsJun 2, 2023 13:34:37 ago (+0/-0)

Multiple keypresses when locked is not the same as holding power button.

No app will allow holding power button when locked to enable torch without root or xposed-like override. I challenge you to prove me wrong (you won't).

Multiple keypresses is a different function. Multiple keypresses is used to open Camera from locked screen on GrapheneOS which interferes with that shortcut.

You think you are very clever in this regard but you just performed a simple web search and now think you know the subject. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect

[ - ] KyleIsThisTall 0 points 1.9 yearsJun 4, 2023 14:43:39 ago (+0/-0)

So I tested 4 different apps. You are wrong.

All 4 worked as described.

HOWEVER< you must edit the app permissions.

Which requires Developer mode.

But they do all work without root.

Shake Flashlight was the best I tested. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidrocker.shakeflashlight

However, as I stated, you must have Developer Mode enabled and set the proper app permissions.

But don't call me a liar when you are wrong.

Yes, it's not "out of the box", but it is completely possible.

I'm on Android 8 on my old phone and Android 12 on my current phone.

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 1.9 yearsJun 4, 2023 16:22:10 ago (+0/-0)

None of those apps have a hold power button to torch. Which is the thing I specifically said I miss, as it was a built in option in Lineage.

Why would I use shake-flashlight shit app if I already have a tasker profile doing the same thing? Which I very clearly specified.

Again, I am running GrapheneOS, to install it I had to enable dev to unlock the bootloader. I have no issue with going out of the box. My issue is that I am missing something very specific and you keep giving me shit noob advice.

If you want to be helpful give me an app that allows hold power button to torch. Other than that you're like the fucking indian tech support telling me to troubleshoot client when they are having a server problem.

[ - ] KyleIsThisTall 0 points 1.9 yearsJun 5, 2023 17:33:46 ago (+0/-0)

First, you said it was impossible. Second, I only mentioned one by name. Third, there were 4 that worked. FITH! you know what you are just a liar. fuck you

[ - ] Clubberlang 1 point 1.9 yearsMay 28, 2023 21:02:46 ago (+1/-0)

There are no dumb phones. Only dumb users.
