Russia has arrested 3 scientists who worked on their "unstoppable" "hypersonic" Kinzhal missiles, several of which have been shot down by American Patriot missiles. They are charged with high treason.

Note that the arrests happened well before 6 Kinzhals were shot down in a recent night strike on Kyiv, in spite of the news breaking shortly after.

It does, however, follow a long Russian tradition of jailing and punishing its own scientists and engineers, under various pretexts, for failing to live up to unreasonable political expectations and hyperbole.

Zvegintsev, 78, along with Anatoly Maslov and Alexander Shiplyuk, are seen as key figures in the development of Russia's hypersonic weapons programme which is thought to be one of the world's most advanced.

And their institute has protested the arrests, claiming the men were being prosecuted over normal scientific activity such as making presentations and taking part in international conferences and projects, and publishing articles in major journals.

Zvegintsev founded Khristianovich Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics' laboratory of Aero Gas Dynamics which deals with hypersonic technologies, and until his detention was still working full time despite his advanced age.

His arrest in April, which has only just been revealed by the Kremlin, has triggered a backlash from fellow scientists who accused the FSB security service of a witch-hunt.

Another scientist and expert on laser physics, Dmitry Kolker, was previously jailed in Lefortovo despite having stage four cancer and died in custody last year.

The Zvegintsev case appears to be a political disagreement between various authorities and "unnamed experts" over what information is classified, and what can be published.

The other two were turned by a Chinese spy and caught passing wind tunnel secrets.

Oh, regarding your point: Usually there are experts in what is classified, who proof-read everything scientists write, before it is published, so that the scientists can focus on being scientists. Why would a scientist be charged with something published after passing inspection? Shouldn't the ones who signed off on it be responsible?

OK @GloryBeckons, As near as I can tell, Putin is a murderous control freak appeared to be controlled by the same tiny hat wearers who control Pres. Biden. Their society does not allow free expression if you are simply opposed to the government you get jailed and the military is disorganized and poorly deployed. To their credit, they have a method of clearing out their jails by a private group which seems like a win-win.

Of note, your posts do not "hurt my feelings", although to me it appears you have bought the false bullshit our .gov is putting out. As an aside, my grandfather served, was a marine and fought an overseas war. My father served, was in the airforce and fought an over seas war. I served as well, a full tour overseas and got lucky: no war for me. But their are lies about this conflict and I'm telling you brother, it is in no way in our countries interest to get involved in this bullshit. Borrowing money we don't have and sending it overseas to a war we have no vital interest in getting involved with but which will weaken us is just plain beyond stupid.

One is on house arrest pending trial. That fourth one did die while imprisoned. These things are matters of fact and record. Yet I get attacked and buried in downvotes. For daring to bring up a truth which they don't want seen or heard of.
