I've thought about this for decades because i record on many mediums. The act of recording reduces quality of life by more than half. Music used to be 100% live, all the time. Photo, video, even worse.

I can see pictures of mountains but when your looking down from one it's an entirely different thing.

I have tinnitus, so music holds little value for me.

But to your broader meaning, yes I agree that current mediums are limited. I have experienced VR, and that is definitely a major step forward for visual representation. Still not perfect, but man it's pretty close.

Ive never tried vr. Is it as disorienting as they claim?

Some people find it disorienting, but I didn't. It's real easy to tip up the goggles if you feel weird. I'd highly recommend trying it if you can.
