All language is a form of mind control. That is its very purpose.

I make a certain set of sounds, you hear them, and now they have become thoughts, going through your head. Thoughts I wanted you to have. Thoughts I put there. Thoughts that are now shaping your mind, strengthening some neural connections and weakening others. Same goes for writing, and also art and music.

Agency requires being able to isolate these outside influences from your inner mind. A firm mental barrier, to separate "what I've been told" from "what I believe", with a gate that can only be opened from the inside.

The vast majority of people have no such barrier. Or perhaps their gate stands wide open. Either way, they are helpless to resist the influences of their perceptions. Everything soaks right into them, becoming part of their identity, and can change again just as quickly with the next tide.

These are the NPCs. A very apt meme to describe them... for they are no different from the AI language models, which will regurgitate with absolute certainty anything they've been trained on, even managing to appear reasonably intelligent in the process, but lacking the ability to disregard or discard anything they've been taught. It can only be overwritten, from the outside, by the next round of training.

Hypnotism is all media. When you forget that if the camera pulled back, you'd see all the lights and mikes and people sitting around outside the scene, you're mildly hypnotized. If you're aware of everything outside the cropped lens view, you're not "into" what you're watching, but aren't hypnotized. It's the asides, the small insinuations dropped in that carry the deeper messages or propaganda that sneaks in to your brain. You didn't fully notice it, so you have nothing to address.

Did you ever read the Dark Tower? I'm not recommending anyone do so. But near the end there's a creature. A monster I suppose, named Dandelo. Dandelo looked like an ordinary man. He claimed to have been a comedian in his younger years. To make a long story short, he was a type of energy vampire. He would get people laughing and feed off of that energy. Except he would never stop. He would just keep you mesmerized w laughter and sucking all your life energy.
