My wife and I paid off our student loans in full, but partially with career-specific forgiveness programs and grants. I'm definitely for shepherding the younger generation responsibly (including education) but only if the "responsibly" part is paramount. Forgiveness of loans paying for bad decisions that gave you no useful skills (personal or professional), and gave you 4 years to party and "study", is not responsible.

Edit: I also applied for retroactive forgiveness out of protest, about 10 years after we finished paying our loans.
