Calling all tech goats

submitted by SignedUp to technology 12 monthsApr 29, 2023 20:07:11 ago (+4/-1)     (technology)

Any users here working on any interesting tech projects? Could be a program, a game, whatever really.
Everything here is just boring reposts or walls of text so let's see if there are people actually working on OC.

I am converting a Lathe from three phase to single phase. I am doing that by swapping the motor with a single phase motor, as it's a quarter of the price compared to VFD and transformer, or phase converter. Got it wired up to run forward, but somehow it gives me a headache to figure out the reverse direction with the relays available in the electrical cabinet.

Dude, you could have just bought a VFD that changes single phase to three-phase. They've gotten really cheap.Single phase revers may not be that simple. Three-phase just swaps two legs.

I would have also needed a transformer to bring 240 volt up to 600 volt. and phase converting VFD for a 7.5 HP motor are not cheap. And from what i understand, the motor would then only have 2/3 of the rated power. (or was that the rotary phase converter?)
The little lathe i am replacing runs on single phase, it's just a matter of figuring out the proper wiring.
Keeping the original motor and converting the power i have to make it suitable would have cost me well over $4k cdn, replacing the main motor and the coolant pump together is $1200cdn. And i can easily install the old motor again when i am moving to a new workshop in a year or two with proper industrial power.

I put opnsense and adguard home for my network a few days ago. They are nice.

What hardware do you like? I've been looking to replace my router and file server with something arm based but I can't make up my mind. I'm currently trying out an Odroid M1. I like it but it's probably overkill for a router.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C1M822S2/ will handle the task

Put xcp-ng on it. Manage it with xcp-ng center at first. Then build xen orchestra from source https://github.com/ronivay/XenOrchestraInstallerUpdater. Now you can run all your shit virtualized. And you can snapshot or export these machines. You can even have two machines with xcp-ng and then move your vm from one machine to another while actively using that vm. There's a fat White guy on youtube he has a bunch of videos about it.

That's a nice box, for 24/7 operation I like low power draw. I'm trying to go arm to cut down on attack surface area. Intel and AMD is known to be hardware back-doored. That VM manager looks pretty sweet tho.

[ - ] Kozel 1 point 12 monthsApr 30, 2023 01:15:11 ago (+1/-0)

Do you have any reason to believe ARM is not hardware backdoored? I'm under the impression that all devices sold after about 2006 have a fed mandated backdoor.

[ - ] allAheadFull 0 points 12 monthsApr 30, 2023 01:31:57 ago (+0/-0)

They could be depending on the manufacturer, but I know Intel and AMD are so until RISCV gets some momentum I'll look for something more obscure.

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 12 monthsApr 30, 2023 01:49:05 ago (+0/-0)

My sparse recollection on the matter is that the the physical backdooring started due to some NSA shit law being passed that all hardware sold must have a backdoor. By that extent, if it is sold legally in USA, it is coming with an NSA backdoor.

[ - ] allAheadFull 0 points 12 monthsApr 30, 2023 02:18:00 ago (+0/-0)

It could be. I really don't trust anything, it's all about probabilities. Besides NSA backdoors you have Intel IME, AMD PSP and BadBIOS. I'm just taking the unknown threats over the known. I've got some old hardware stored for emergencies.

Plug a usb ethernet adapter in to your old hardware and you have a secure opnsense router

I'm going to check out opnsense. I am using pfSense and I was really enjoying the firewall blocklist integration but they had performance problems with it and they took the feature out. I really like the idea of a geo/org-IP based firewall. I may have to get the perl skills out and write one.

[ - ] allAheadFull 0 points 12 monthsApr 30, 2023 18:13:23 ago (+0/-0)

Here's a good blocklist resource. Soem lists are free others $10 a year for all, worth it imo.

Oh yeah bluetack and peerguardian, I remember those. I'm not paying them $10 I don't torrent warez :)

I'm using the Firehol lists under firewall aliases and snort/et/abuse.ch lists on intrusion detection. And Maltral bans funny actors without an iplist if you add BlocklistMaltrail alias to firewall. Crowdsec does something similar with purportedly zero false positives.

Funny, was searching for this project for far longer than I should have, especially when I am building with this in mind, as far as watering the garden.

Perhaps I'm tired, but even gitMSFT was not showing it. Strange, active project and all?

Ahh, got it, they bailed on MSFT Dick in your mouth.

Nah mate. I've made a few mods but nothing I'm doing at the moment.

at work we just finished up a cardiac ablation system for general release.

at home, i'm forcing my son to write up some lego midstorms project. he is resisting :-(

I've setup solar with house batteries, engine batteries, and a cooking battery because induction. 100% sustainable sailboat. 13 batteries total.

[ - ] BushChuck 1 point 12 monthsApr 29, 2023 21:43:25 ago (+1/-0)

100% sustainable, right until you need to replace your batteries, and panels. Induction coils will also eventually fail.

And you are using an electric motor? I'm on my second trolling motor in six years. they also will eventually fail.

It annoys me when people pretend electric/solar/wind is somehow sustainable, or "green".

My yacht has sails, and burns diesel. Yes I have batteries, but I'm not dead in the water without them.

You rocking lithium batteries? Because lithium batteries in a boat is a very bad idea.

[ - ] ghetto_shitlord 0 points 12 monthsApr 29, 2023 22:21:04 ago (+0/-0)

Everything eventually fails. A propane failure though is quite explosive. Replacements are years away, for both the batteries, panels, and induction top. You're operating on old information. Cheaper than replacing and maintaining a diesel on the motor for sure. No stink and quiet. The motor is hardly used, as it's a sailboat. Docking and undocking. Usually when leaving anchor, the sails are up as soon as the anchor is so no use. Lithium is fine on a boat as long as it's properly ventilated.

Pretend. Cute.

You sound like a buggy whip operator. Enjoy that noise and vibration.

[ - ] BushChuck 1 point 12 monthsApr 30, 2023 15:06:34 ago (+1/-0)

Cheaper than maintaining a diesel? lol, what? I have a 1954 Ford diesel tractor that I use near daily, bro.

My boat's got the original Yanmar from 1985. And it never breaks down. I would never use a propane heater, I have a nice 1980's diesel heater in my galley.

Yes, pretend. Lithium mining is a highly toxic process, as is the manufacture of solar panels. At best both of these items have a 30 year lifespan. That's assuming they don't just outright fail long before that.

You're taking lithium batteries on the ocean? You are full insane. Properly ventilated means that sea water will eventually cause those batteries to explode.

I have solar panels, and a bank of AGM batteries, but like I said, they fail, and I'm just fine.

A buggy whip operator? You have no idea the shit show that all this EV nonsense is causing. It's full retard, and it's not new.
Henry Ford first built an electric automobile in 1914, it was an inferior vehicle then, as it is today.

Electric sailboat is just full retard, bro.

[ - ] ghetto_shitlord 0 points 12 monthsApr 30, 2023 15:17:09 ago (+0/-0)*

Fuel filters, impellers, heat exchangers, buying diesel, inevitable diesel bug. That alone is a decent maintenance bill yearly. The electric motor is maintenance free. Also, when you should need to repower, it's cheaper and easier. It was a royal pain in the ass getting the heavy ass loud, vibrating, stinky diesel out of this thing. In 3 years, I have not even 200 hours on the motor. It should make 5k easily.

Yes, I have had batteries on the ocean for 3 years now. How will sea water cause an explosion when it cannot get into the battery box? Do you know how to setup ventilation on a boat bro? You use a U-shaped loop with a drain at the bottom. 0 chance of water intrusion. YouTube university can show you this.

THOUSANDS of sailboat cruisers are running lithium.

The reference to propane was cooking, not heating. Where I am we don't have a need for heat.

Your panels failed? how old? I have run into people with 10 year old panels working just fine. AGM, shorter life than lithium, and you need more of them as you cannot run them down too low or you damage them. 30 years of solar and a quiet engine? That's bad somehow? Extracting oil is highly toxic as well.

What's retarded is deriding new technology with incorrect information.
