Yeah so there isn't a clear distinction. A lot of German surnames became associated with jews in America. I don't know whether because other Germans anglicized their names or how many innocuous names in Germany came to be jewish here.

Yiddish stole a lot of words from the German language, and since the jews have such a prominent presence in american media, many of those German words are associated with jews.
