Sounds like western digital practices redundant backups.

The companies that pay are the ones that don't have backups.

This is proof:

If you can help it. Never negotiate with a terrorist.

Western digital will just release updated firmware and apologize to stakeholders. Nobody really cares what the hackers have.

they literally produce the devices needed to backup data, it would be really slack if they didn't

With distributed source control, git, it's backend up everywhere

Generally your open source is not an issue.

[ - ] ElementalPee 0 points 1 yearApr 19, 2023 18:13:58 ago (+0/-0)

I don't think backups are the issue. They're threatening to release documents that expose their corruption. That's what that text on the right side claims anyhow. And I may be misinterpreting it but the part on the left seems to be suggesting that Western Digital is complicit in espionage.

2 more weeks and they'll show how corrupt WD is!

Didn’t look at what it said—my upvoat comes from “Poojeets”.

Anybody ever worked at one of these big companies? Nobody gives a shit. About anything really.

At best you’ve got some engineers who do it for the love of doing a good job. It’s not like anyone identifies as the company. All these companies were taken over and now run by some royal blood line sniveling company usurper.

Imagine being schooled by a streetshitter refund scammer on ethics and integrity.

fuck you WD. bought a couple of WD and they all died within a month and then they denied me my warranty because a sticker was missing.

Looks like OMG!ForeignSabotage!!

Every blow-hard "President" of the US since the Grinning Peanut™ has threatened to pursue kinetic measures against "cyber-terror". Fucking DO IT.

Haven't multiple US presidents threatened to regard hack-attacks as "acts of war"?

If a country's government is too feeble to keep their own citizens from mounting international cyber-attacks, perhaps they're too backward to enjoy the privileges of:
1. Internet
2. Air Travel
3. Electricity

Turns out Western Digital is actually corrupt and spent the ransom money on a hit squad.

[ - ] winners_history 1 point 1 yearApr 18, 2023 22:01:58 ago (+1/-0)

Then they should have hired a better hit squad.

Anyone got a good explanation on the backstory of WD, what WD is up too
and the people behind this blackmail attempt ???

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 1 point 1 yearApr 18, 2023 21:12:11 ago (+1/-0)

Not really, but it sounded like they are whining about WD's NAS's being insecure. They can probably read all the files on them.

[ - ] winners_history 1 point 1 yearApr 18, 2023 22:54:03 ago (+1/-0)

What's the point of having a NAS attached to the 'cloud'? There's a reason there's a setup item to disallow it, right on the config screen.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 1 point 1 yearApr 18, 2023 23:18:23 ago (+1/-0)

I don't know. My NAS is a retired Dell server (tower) with extra hard drives. And that server also does other stuff.

[ - ] GhostCow 0 points 1 yearApr 19, 2023 00:07:01 ago (+0/-0)

This is the way. I do something similar, but I use an HTPC as my NAS.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 0 points 1 yearApr 19, 2023 00:27:43 ago (+0/-0)

I installed an eSATA port to connect to an old hardware RAID enclosure that I have which serves as the primary local backup. It doesn't have to use my network, but it effectively moves the data to a different box that can function independently if the server explodes for some reason. I suppose if I was ransomed I might be in trouble.

The hackers sound like they would fit in here

[ - ] Niggly_Puff -3 points 1 yearApr 18, 2023 17:04:54 ago (+0/-3)

Fuck Western Digital.
