It's a misconception that the dark ages were some sort of regression in technology and culture. Progress did fall off some relative to the period before it, but the era is much more defined by it's relatively lack of historical documentation; both are which most likely due to the significant levels of political strife among the nobility and the general volatile nature of the time.

At a stroke, a major fraction of civilation's accumulated knowledge disappeared. He wasn't Christian.
I would bet that there are mult examples of conquering Muslims burning/destroying libraries of peoples they conquered from 620 CE onward.
Suspect humans in general can be relied upon to destroy as many remnants and reminders of any/all conquered peoples, tribes, states

Compare that to the 14th century England that was jew-free (mostly) in which the average worker had around 120 days of holiday leisure time each year. Even if they weren't technologically as advanced as we are today, they sure lived a much happier life.
