If you're looking to browse anonymously, you're better off with Tor than any VPN. The only good reason to use VPN is to pretend you're in a specific country other than your own (ie, for things like Netflix).
Four options for using Tor:
1. Download and use Tor Browser. It's a security hardened and de-Mozilla'd Firefox. It routes all browsing through the Tor network. You can (and should) still use a different browser for things you don't care about anonymizing.
2. Download and use Brave Browser. It's a security hardened and de-Google'd Chrome. Select "private tab with Tor" from the menu for things you want routed through Tor. Use regular browsing or normal private tabs for everything else.
4. Download Tails. Follow instructions to burn it to a flash drive. Boot into Tails from USB to browse anonymously. Or follow instructions to use it with VirtualBox, like Whonix.
All four options are free and provide superior anonymity than VPN (or VPS).
First two options are one-click install brain-dead easy. Second two options require minor tech literacy slightly above the average boomer, being able to read and follow a few paragraphs of instructions, and a bit more than one or two clicks of the mouse button. However, you are rewarded with improved security and privacy.
In any case, keep in mind that you should never use this for inherently identifiable things like banking, real name social media, etc. The same applies when using VPNs (unless, again, you're just using it to defeat geo-location... but then a VPS is safer).

Youll find that most websites stop working when you maintain your privacy.
