So far the sowing is going well

submitted by sguevar to Gardening 2 yearsApr 14, 2023 09:54:57 ago (+36/-0)     (Gardening)

We moved to our own place last October 30th.
Our lot is about 900 mts2 and I have been working the land in my spare time. Good thing is that working from home is a big benefit because I am able to just take a little walk through our yard and see how everything is going.

So far we have planted:

- cherry tomatoes
- tomatoes
- squash
- zucchini
- potatoes
- onions
- avocado
- arracache
- melon
- water melon
- orange lemon
- cas guava
- mango
- tangerine
- orange
- spinach
- blackberry
- coriander
- lettuce
- chamomile
- chive
- banana
- sweet corn
- sweet pepper
- hot pepper
- carrots
- papaya
- celery
- Italian parsley
- mint
- thyme
- aloe vera

We are still missing the coffee trees and other plants, but all in due time. Hopefully in a couple of months/years we will see everything fructify in the Lord's name.

That's one hell of garden! Add snow peas. They're the best.

You need meat. Sheep rabbits chickens and of course egg-laying hens. Goats are also very good for meat and for milk. They pretty much take care of themselves and will eat almost anything.

I spoke with my wife about having chickens. Thing is I know nothing about them and i figure it is harder than working the land.

I have an idea of their refuge with wood. But we are also doubtful because they attire rats... Any advice?

Also quail are great for smaller plots with limited space.

Wow! Congrats. Can you give us a hint of what state or region you are in where all these wonderful things can grow ?

I live in Costa Rica, in a mountain area.

... and you are not growing Potatoes, Coffee or Pineapples? What types of Chillis/Peppers are you growing?

[ - ] sguevar [op] 4 points 2 yearsApr 14, 2023 10:46:51 ago (+4/-0)

potatoes are planted, they haven't sprouted though. Coffee eventually, need to get me at least 5 trees. Nearby there is a coffee plantation, maybe they can't give me the ones i want there. Pineapples, not interested. I think with the amount of fruit trees i have growing currently is enough. I am more interested in getting garlic, oregano, maybe broccoli, spearmint...

More power to you but that is too many varieties. I did something similar my first few years but i was too spread out and nothing truly thrived. Once i cut back to 10-12 varieties, things stared going much better. Plus, we had buckets of stuff we didnt really eat that much like radishes. Still gettin em 4 years later with no planting.

Carrots, tomatoes (3 varieties), rosemary, 4 varieties of peppers, cuces, maybe some odds and ends but that is about it. 128sq feet all organic.

We'll see how it goes. I don't plant much of them though, small sections in order to get some. I am playing by the average of each plant's production. For example I planted 11 seeds of corn, only 9 sprouted. And so on and so forth. That way I do not take too much space on each sowing and can test the ground.

Fortunately this soil is very rich and has been used before for such agriculture.

But, will keep your advise in mind and let you know how it goes.

I have been collecting photos of my friends first gardening experience.

I have been helping him with the process and his seedlings have really taken off in just three of four days. I want to give an easy peasy guide to making the best use of a small patch of land.

I hope to hear more great news about your garden in the future!

I will make sure to take pictures as soon as everything is growing and share them with you. This is in fact the first attempt at something this big for me. I used to plant small plants before but since we have a good patch of land well I need to put it to work for my family. I obviously made mistakes but that will get corrected in the future.

Also I’d love to see a lot of voats or constitution loving Americans in one place to all buy farmland near each other and look out for each other. If you know of a place or have ideas. [email protected]

I am Costa Rican and strongly advise to not share your personal information on an anonymous forum. That being said I am a Constitutionalist.

I support the commune idea however, I don't support the idolatry of it. Not saying you do that but a lot of people does here.
