What is cheap right now?

submitted by MaryXmas to Finance 1 yearApr 10, 2023 11:42:31 ago (+6/-0)     (Finance)

Stocks are high, metals are high, lots of instability in the dollar so long term bonds are not great. Cash might be ok, but inflation is real high. What is cheap?

Inb4: Buy brass and lead, you are gonna need it for the blacks.

OP said "cheap", not "free".

Thanks Pim. I appreciate your advice.

Silver is the most undervalued asset in existence at this time.

[ - ] La_Chalupacabra 1 point 1 yearApr 10, 2023 13:52:49 ago (+1/-0)

Any recommendations/guides for buying for us would-be first-timers?

[ - ] beece 2 points 1 yearApr 10, 2023 14:21:03 ago (+2/-0)

Buy gold @La_Chalupacabra, and buy it only from a US mint direct source. https://catalog.usmint.gov/bullion-dealer-locator

Note that each dealer can mark it up whatever they want, so check prices first. There is a buy and a sell price.

Thanks, man.

[ - ] TheSimulacra 2 points 1 yearApr 10, 2023 14:56:44 ago (+2/-0)

Ive used SDBullion and had no issues, although since the recent bank collapse they are taking longer to fulfill orders.

Buy in sizes that can be traded if necessary. Its not yours if its not in your hands

Food and bullets are more important.

Silver and gold form the basis of all financial instruments. As the system collpases, all fake money will flood there, and it will become unobtainable.

[ - ] SilentByAssociation 1 point 1 yearApr 10, 2023 15:22:36 ago (+1/-0)

SD Bullion has a new minimum order of $500 because demand has skyrocketed so much.

[ - ] FluffyBunnySlippers 0 points 1 yearApr 10, 2023 18:22:22 ago (+0/-0)

That sure doesn’t sound like an undervalued asset.

[ - ] SilentByAssociation 0 points 1 yearApr 10, 2023 22:23:41 ago (+0/-0)

I've been hearing that silver is being kept "artificially low" for effectively my whole life. It never really made much sense to me.

[ - ] mrevilpirate 2 points 1 yearApr 10, 2023 16:49:35 ago (+2/-0)

Research laws in your state re: sales tax. Where I am bullion is taxed, but only up to a certain threshold. Once you hit that number the entire order is tax free. For gold I would get 1 oz US minted coins from reputable dealer (JM Bullion has been good for me). An oz of gold is not cheap, but you pay too much premium for fractional coins (in my opinion). For silver I would go with generic 10 oz bars, again from a reputable dealer.

[ - ] Prairie 1 point 1 yearApr 10, 2023 15:51:10 ago (+1/-0)

Get 1 oz coins. They're easiest to move and test. Go for popular coins like Maples and Eagles. Buy from a major dealer like APMEX, JM Bullion, SD Billion.

Oh JFC, you're one of those.

Silver is always being pumped and never does anything. ANYONE claiming silver is the way to go was one of the idiots who bought into someone else's hype and is now desperate for other people to be just as stupid.

[ - ] TheSimulacra 0 points 1 yearApr 11, 2023 16:39:26 ago (+0/-0)

You are welcome not to listen to my opinion. I dont give a fuck.
When the money system falls apart, silver goes to the moon. FACT
I could care less what anyone else does.

[ - ] totes_magotes 0 points 1 yearApr 11, 2023 18:39:58 ago (+0/-0)

Whoa, you really misspelled "I was stupid and dumped all of my money into silver and don't know what the 'sunk cost' fallacy is so I'm desperate to get anyone else I can to make the same mistake so I can turn it into a scam and leave as soon as I break even."

[ - ] TheSimulacra 0 points 1 yearApr 12, 2023 12:30:52 ago (+0/-0)

Woah you really are an asshole.
Adding you to the ever growing list...
You contribute nothing of value.

What is made from silver as a crucial component?

[ - ] TheSimulacra 0 points 1 yearApr 11, 2023 16:39:55 ago (+0/-0)

All sorts of weapons and explosives for one...

If you think both stocks and metals are too high, then it seems you are looking for a steal, which is not going to happen. The DJIA was at 37,000 at the beginning of last year. It is at 33,500 right now, so it is down 9.4% from its high. If you think that is still over priced, you should go into metals.

Keeping more than $5K cash on hand is silly to me, since the banks are not giving shit. While "safe," it is obviously getting eroded by inflation.

Bonds are for boomers.

From what I have heard from others, guns and ammo keep going up in price, so you might not want to dismiss those that say "brass and lead."

Just my stupid amateur views.

Tobacco seeds.
Pipe variety, definitely; additionally, rolling if you want to go that route.
Get a flue or, preferably, air-dry variety.
Easy to grow at most latitudes and you can keep a supply of seeds going indefinitely with minimal space.
Very handy to have if we ever get into a mass barter-type scenario.

Last year I put a bunch of cash that was under the mattress into gold. Is it cheap at $2000 an ounce? Not as cheap as last year, and I suspect it is cheaper now than it will be next year at this time.

[ - ] BushChuck 2 points 1 yearApr 10, 2023 13:00:39 ago (+2/-0)

lol, metals are not high.

Litecoin and Ethereum, under $100 & $2000, respectively, and the government considers them and bitcoin as commodities.

Dollars are cheap.

[ - ] SilentByAssociation 0 points 1 yearApr 10, 2023 15:28:32 ago (+0/-0)

Due to SVB, bank stocks are on sale.

FHN
DFS
RF
TRST
COLB
ABCB
SNV

Not much else appears to be cheap...

What I'm getting from this thread is nobody here actually knows anything, aside from @GrayDragon and @beece who actually answered the question and included their reasoning.

There are many assets which return significant value in dollars.

Most of them involve direct energy arbitrage.
