ALL UK media is 'government'media due to the existence of the "D Notice", a hang up from ww2 that allows the government to kill any story they choose.

Technically it is incorrect to call the BBC government funded, as the government doesn't fund the BBC, which is responsible for the collection and enforcement of the licence fee...

However, the gov does determine what the fee will be and the enforcement is enabled by specific gov law.

The reason why it is inaccurate to call the BBC government funded, is because that implies government control when in fact them BBC is controlled by the lefty literaty and ((them)).

Like many things in the UK it is an amalgam of grey zones and compromises.

The gov can D notice, but only as long as it doesn't take the piss (same can't be said about the royal family mind)

Gov can't withold funding if it doesn't like what the BBC is planning or doing, but in the long run, can refuse to raise fee in line with inflation etc.

Generally speaking the BBC does serve a very worthwhile service, and that is to provide TV 100% free of ((advertising)).

That benefit is somewhat waning tho

Edit to add:
The gov does have a say in the BBC 'charter' which is basically it's constitution and is renewed ever so many years

If I don't want the bbc channels but still want live tv, I still have to pay the bbc through the tax or go to prison.

Go fuck yourself not government funded.

Rework one of Capita's threat letters and send THEM one. https://files.catbox.moe/t1yuz4.png

I used to troll them...

Call the number
"Hello, do I need a TV licence to watch TV as it's being transmitted?"

#yes

"Ok but what if I only watch TV before it's transmitted?"

#sorry what?

"Well if I want to watch game of thrones on channel 4 I need a license right?"

#yes

"But channel 4 is only on season 3, and the pirate bay is already on season 4...so do I need a TV licence to watch pirated content before it's transmitted?"

#uhh...no I guess not

"Ok well then I don't need a license, take me off the list please"

The letter you posted seems fun, but honestly completely unnecessary....then again, so is calling them to fuck with the wagie who really doesn't give a shit one way or the other

[ - ] uvulectomy 0 points 1 yearApr 10, 2023 18:30:49 ago (+0/-0)

The letter is more to keep their harassment drones from walking up your path and asking to have a look-see because they have nothing better to do.

Worst case scenario you get a fine...

Yk got rid of debt prisons a very very long time ago..
No amount of money owed to anyone will land you in prison, even the government (as in if you can't pay your tax bill, but obviously if you take evade that can if you're naughty enough)

And just to be a prick...

Loisonse fee doesn't just fund BBC, also the rest of the terrestrial channels like channel 4 etc.

There is no TV package that doesn't include them so you're stuck with it....but...just don't watch live TV.

Germany is much much much worse...there it's an 'entertainment tax' which you need to watch anything, including on demand etc. If it's video you pay

"Technically it is incorrect to call the BBC government funded, as the government doesn't fund the BBC"

If a Brit doesn't pay the license fee, under the law it is a criminal act with a penalty that averages £176 with a legal maximum of £1,000.

The fact that the tax is collected directly by a corporation rather than being processed through the government first doesn't change the fact that the funding for the BBC is imposed on the public by government with the all of the power of law behind it.

The BBC is “government-funded media”, because without the implicit threat of government force behind it, the funding wouldn't be paid to the corporation.

There's no threat to take me to jail if I don't pay my electric bill. See the difference?

Hitler was right. \o

Unfortunately, some jurisdictions will try to evict you from your own property if you refuse to have electric service.

Big difference between "civil process" and "crime".
"some jurisdictions" isn't the whole country. "some jurisdictions" also leave you completely alone to live in peace.
Got a Starlink? That's your business.

Yeah, WTF, for anybody outside the UK who doesn't know, they literally charge a tax if you have a TV because you might watch their garbage. Imagine that, having a TV station that you broadcast freely over the air, but then forcing everyone to pay you because your TV is capable of receiving it. What a fucking racket, only possible with government. But oh no, they are independent from government.

As if any mainstream media doesn't exist expressly to spout off (((government))) lies.

"Oi- ya got a loisense to get brainwashed?"

[ - ] WanderingToast 1 point 1 yearApr 10, 2023 17:54:02 ago (+1/-0)

That's not how it works, methinks you might be paying it (if you are) without good reason.

Also they just assume everyone has a TV, and will send letters for a bit to houses with occupants on electoral roll without licence, there is no checking, or detecting (beyond IP logging on bbc i-player) and there is also virtually zero enforcement.

Any enforcement you see, is people picked because they will cause a fuss, so as to create PR.

Same with the old school 'detector vans' that actually couldn't detect shit.

Just fear porn PR to discourage non-compliance

I live in the UK and I haven't paid a TV license for 6 years now. The trick is to just not tune in your TV and never sign up for BBC Iplayer. Owning my own house I've just cut my aerial out of my house so no one has ever even forced an inspection.

[ - ] sarkbear 2 points 1 yearApr 10, 2023 11:49:44 ago (+2/-0)

They can't deny it because it is literally paid for by revenues collected by the government.
