Yea. If you aren't being observed literally every second what are you even doing? Maybe 1% of users have opsec that would throw off the intelligence agencies.

in some regions you can't get a phone number without tying it to your real life ID in some way and of course most services block VoIP and other throwaway phone number services

Especially with the advent of big data. The idea of the watch list with 2,000 people on it is dead and gone. Or the idea of having select users of a forum on a watch list is also gone. If they are using big data concepts, and they are, the motto is make the list large, make it easy to get on the list. That means if you are on this site, you are on a list. If there is any indication that you are Christian, you are on a list. If you are white, you are on a list. If you live in a right of center county, you are on a list. If you have ever made a comment on the internet indicating you know more than nothing about guns, you are on a list. If you have ever used the word nitrate on the internet, you are on a list.
