Many years ago we would use alcohol based glue in high school art class. Pickle jar size of this goop on every table.
One day I decided to do a trick. I dunked the tip of my index finger in the glue and then when the teacher turned her back to write on the blackboard, I pulled out my lighter and sparked my finger to the amazement and giggles from class mates. It glowed a pretty blue flame but transferred no heat, couldn’t feel it at all. Quick puff of air like blowing out a candle extinguished the flame.
Buddy sitting next to me decided to do a better trick. He submerged his entire hand up to the wrist!
Teacher turned her back again so I gave him a light. His hand exploded into an incredible glove of fire!
All the kids were mesmerized, it looked really cool. Then he tried blowing it out. Then he tried blowing it out again. Next it must have started getting really hot because he started to panic like the girl in the video with the dollar bill.
He turned to me and whispered urgently “help dude!”. When the teacher turned back facing the class she saw my pal with his hand on the floor and me jumping up and down on it trying to put out the fire.
I was sent straight to the principal’s office, buddy went to nurses office for a gauss bandage, then promptly joined me and the principal for an hour of scolding and punishment protocols.
We both were suspended for two days meaning I caught shit big time from my parents. It was worth it just for the education.
No, had to dump him after about 40 years of a mostly one sided friendship. I saved his ass probably a dozen times but at the lowest point in my life he was far from supportive, exact opposite actually.
The goober has left me with some pretty good stories though.
A simple experiment where alcohol burning absorbs heat faster than it can move to the paper, so the paper stays below its ignition point. At some instant that alcohol will not absorb enough heat and the paper can catch if the flame is not extinguished in time.
