That would certainly work into the argument for abolition of cash.
So, perhaps one answer is for folks to slowly withdraw their money -- starting now -- from the banks so that there isn't a shock to the system when they pull it later this year. Actually, I can see them timing it for the election so they can head off one crisis -- J6 on steroids -- with a manufactured one.

I think what you're going to see is parallel dummy currency emerging alongside the digital one; something with no intrinsic value which people will hold and claim as the object of the transaction in lieu of the actual item or service that can't be named, for obvious reasons. Who knows? Maybe things like Beanie Babies will be making a comeback: "I didn't buy an ounce of weed; I bought 200 Pokemon cards! See, officer?"

It could be gold or silver, but something more commonplace and with no intrinsic value, like collectible cards, beanie babies, or whatever fad, would be better because there's more of it and, therefore, more difficult for the government to track. Also, the former are largely fixed in price due to regulation and controls, while an artificially-created demand by a black market could set the price of the latter at whatever it feels like.
At that point, the government really only has two options: ban interpersonal transactions or force them to be conducted through a third party that is a functionary of the state or an agency itself. There may also be a technological solution I'm not considering, but we'll burn that bridge when we get to it.
They're not; they'll be using it as cover for a transaction that involves contraband or something else they want hidden from prying, government eyes.
