SDR folks in here?

I found a little black box with no markings on it at all. I opened it to see what I could see. It's there any way that I could use this for software succumbed radio? I plug it into my USB port and it just says that it's a serial adaptor. I've looked up the chip on it and read the manual, but am not sure how to get it to do anything. Any pointers?

Also, because of where I find this box, I am certain that at least one government agency is breaking FCC law.

I believe the coil is sub 1 ghz wireless

I found this box, and many like it, lurking quietly behind a cash register. It seems that the lottery in my state like to use them for communicating with their other black boxes.

I think that "security through obfuscation" is the term for it. The outer shell is a plain black box that has zero markings... You have to actually take a screw driver to it to find it anything about it.
