I'm of the opinion that free men don't ask for permission but it's still pretty cool. Goes into effect July 1st.

Because, typically speaking, laws don't get enacted within x-amount of days or while the legislation is still in session. They get passed, but enacted later. That's standard stuff in pretty much all US jurisdictions.

That said, Maine has had permit-less carry (for lawful owners) for quite a while now. We were the first to enact it, I do believe. Contrary to the pundit's predictions, it did not turn Maine into a lawless hellhole. In fact, it appears to have done nothing to either combat crime nor increase crimes with a handgun.

Those rates have been pretty steady in their incline - and it's a very slow incline. Tricky people will point to the incline and say, "See!!??!! We warned you!!!" But, in reality, the rate of incline hasn't really adjusted. We had like 29 murders in 2022 (for the whole state of Maine) and more than half of those were domestic violence offenses.

Washington's emergency "assault weapons" bill is set to go into effect as soon as the governor signs it. Curfews and mask BS didn't take 2 months to set up during COVID. Whenever something makes us a little more free we have to wait. That's the real reason.

Limits on fundamental rights are supposed to pass strict scrutiny. I think you've described intermediate scrutiny or rational basis.

I'm not sure, but that's soon enough that if you did get caught carrying without a permit before then you wouldn't see court until after. Or you can just wait and hopefully you don't have any encounters where you wished you were armed. I'm not telling you how to live your life here.

I'm already an ass-kicker, but my whole thing is that carrying weapons should be legal, period. Thugs don't care what the 'law' is, they carry weapons in places law-abiding people aren't allowed to. Having to sit in a class several hours and pay for a piece of paper is gay, and I have been waiting for this shit to finally be legal.
