I always took more from Lot's story as someone who held on in a bad situation until he couldn't any longer. He was the last good person living in a fallen city and was determined to do anything, and sacrifice anyone, to protect any good that came from outside.

However, he was deeply damaged by living in that fallen city and so for example thought nothing of offering his daughter to be raped. He just escaped at the very end, but barely. He was so torn that his wife, his other half, refused to escape in the end and was destroyed.

Moral is: It is hard to leave everything to strive to build. But, you must know when to leave.

All the incesty crap I always felt was a weird add-on that didn't add much to the story.

His daughters were an extension of himself. Property. They werent seen as individuals with civil rights in that culture— they had low value. These were pastoralists who were comfortable with alot of violence and rape. Offering his daughters is just being a good selfless host to his guest. I think its wrong to interpret as a failing in that context. To the jews, this is an instance of selflessness.

I think that some of these old stories were re-worked by the authors of the bible to teach the correct message. So there are lots of weird things that dont seem to fit the stories well.
