you test what kind of metal you have by sticking into an outlet. Any old working outlet will do. If you're shocked, you know you got some good metal there.
So many subgenres, too. You gotta figure out what you like first. Doom, thrash, death, grind, black, crossover thrash. They’re all very different. Look up the subgenres and listen to the recommendations, then you can explore further.
At this point it would take a great deal of writing. It's grown pretty large.
You must know the biggest names. Go listen to some of that. You'll easily find other, lesser known bands from there.
In the beginning there was Sabbath. Some say there was earlier metal, but there really wasn't. There was really hard rock, but it didn't really become metal until Sabbath. And then a bunch of stuff happened.
I have a wide taste in metal. I like hair metal to thrash metal. I'm not a fan of Cookie Monster Metal though.
As a kid, I started listening to Motley Crue, Ratt, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Led Zepplin, Ozzy, Tesla, the Toadies etc.
Pantera was originally an 80'd hair metal band and were pretty good. But then they became a lot harder in the 90's. Cowboys From Hell was a big turning point.
Of course Metallica, Megadeth, slayer, and Anthrax are mandatory. I would suggest anything from the 80s to early 90s with these bands.
