On Friday, during an interview on French tv, Macron was asking for sacrifices from the French people, explaining that the state has no money to send people to retirement at 62 years age. Then he realized he is wearing a €80,000 wristwatch, making it disappear under the table.
An official response from the Élysée Palace is that the watch is totally not expensive, just has some unique personalized dial with the coat of arms of the presidency, so basically nothing. The watch allegedly banged loudly against the table, and so Macron removed it to prevent the noise from being picked up by sensitive microphones...
I didn’t say it wasn’t a luxury watch, I was saying it wasn’t super-expensive. $2000 is the absolute bottom end of the luxury watch market. It is not absurd for the President of a 1st World country to have a nice watch. You may not be familiar with me, but I created the wristwatches board on here. I have 6 watched that are more expensive than that, one that is as expensive, and several lesser watches. I’m not a President, I’m not even a Supervisor at the moment. I’m just a line worker, yet I have a watch collection worth much more.
