Tips regarding 'loud' appliances and foot comfort

submitted by NeedleStack to TraditionalWives 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 13:38:09 ago (+14/-1)     (TraditionalWives)

On the rare occasions I run the (very loud) dishwasher, I pair the task with vacuuming at the same time so that I'm doing two loud tasks at once to get them over with. I put in foam ear plugs while I do this to minimize the annoyance.

I don't recommend blaring music in headphones to combat the noise because you'll definitely create long-term ear damage.

There have been times when I've started the dishwasher as I'm heading out the door to run errands but this is risky because you ought to be home in case there's a leak or problem where you'll need to stop the machine before things get worse. I know this isn't a common issue but you never know!

About foot comfort: I have a pair of sneakers I wear indoors only for housework. It's made a world of difference because my feet are way less aggravated by the end of my chores than if I were barefoot or in socks. Sneakers are so cheap in thrift stores now, you could pick up a comfy pair just for the home. Remember to treat yourself to cushy socks as well (and perhaps gel inserts) to help you last longer on your feet.

Chime in if you have similar tips!

We're White. They're tennis shoes, not sneakers.

[ - ] NeedleStack [op] 1 point 1 yearMar 29, 2023 18:03:19 ago (+1/-0)

Whether one says "tennis shoes" or "sneakers" depends on what region you're from. Here's a pretty cool breakdown:

Do you call it "soda" or "pop"?

[ - ] Sector7 9 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 14:27:49 ago (+9/-0)

My dishwasher was only loud in the middle of the night, when we "needed to talk right now".

[ - ] Gowithit 2 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 14:39:18 ago (+2/-0)

The husband pulled that line once on me.

He was at work and texted " we need to talk"

I called him right up and asked what is this? I've never done that to him so I don't know where he got it from.

He didn't want to talk... he wanted to yell at me from a distance which I found hilarious.

How did you handle your " we need to talk"?

[ - ] Sector7 2 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 17:04:10 ago (+2/-0)

I would keep falling back asleep because it was the middle of the night. Then she would go wildcat mode. I wasn't excited about it at the time, but my drama level dropped to near zero after the divorce.

[ - ] paul_neri 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 19:21:40 ago (+0/-0)

I wish my missus "needed to talk". Her favourite line is: "not now". She puts off doing anything if she can.Not for a week. Not a month not even a year. But forever. I once said I need to pull down the garage to our house (that was owned by her), which was comprised of large concrete blocks. She said: "not now". One side of the garage collapsed and smashed the car...on her side. If she'd been getting into the car at the wrong time she probably would have got seriously injured.

Oh, you are alive. Sad

[ - ] paul_neri 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 24, 2023 02:20:58 ago (+0/-0)

Yes. Not sure if I told you I'm...5 x jabbed!

[ - ] Gowithit 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 23:23:33 ago (+0/-0)

Ruling in her favor. Your job is to do. It was your fault it didnt get fixed in time.

This sounds almost as if your delaying was intentional. Im going to need to hear more detail on this brush fire you "helped" put out or this "basement flooding" you had. Thats a lot of accidents for one household dont you think?

If noise like that bothers you, and you still want to be able to listen to music/audio while working, consider investing in a decent set of wireless headphones with active noise canceling. Sony XM3/XM4/XM5 series, for example. Sennheiser and Bose have similar models. There are earbuds that do this, too, but I've never tried them so can't vouch for them.

They work by inverting the sound they record outside the headset and playing it back. Cancels out the sound wave. Works almost too well sometimes... Careful when cooking with them on.

Many models also come with a mode that repeats ambient sound instead of inverting. So you hear things going on around you just as well, or better, than without the headphones, even if you have music playing.

It's not us.. it's these danged emf's.

[ - ] GloryBeckons 2 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 16:29:40 ago (+2/-0)

It's not easy finding a headset with active NC but without wireless. Active NC requires a battery and, if you have a battery, then you might as well have wireless. However, most of the mid-to-high-end wireless headsets also support wired mode, by plugging in either a standard audio jack or USB cable.

On the Sony XM3, specifically, plugging in an audio cable fully disables the bluetooth unit, even when active NC is enabled. Mileage may vary with other headsets.

That said, bluetooth is a very low energy wireless technology. Standard wifi and cellphones radiate considerably more energy, on the order of 100-1000 times more. You're certainly better off using a bluetooth headset than holding a cellphone up to your ear, or keeping it right next to your gonads for that matter.

I have a pair of airplane headphones that both fold into a tiny pocket in my backpack and are plugged-in noise cancelling powered by a AAA that lasts many hours. They are on-ear and not very big. This sometimes I think hurts the point of noise cancelling, however they are more comfortable to me than in-ear, and they work. They also work as non-noise-cancelling headphones when the battery is dead or when you turn off the feature. Only need power for noise cancelling.

Let me know if you wanna get em. They are weird and old.

[ - ] localsal 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 20:39:32 ago (+0/-0)

There are wireless headphones - not the earbud kind - that can do active noise cancellation without any connection.

Essentially just turn them on and the active cancellation works without being paired. Lightweight ones are pretty common too.

Also, just regular ear muffs work pretty well and have gotten pretty comfortable.

[ - ] Gowithit 2 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 14:27:11 ago (+2/-0)

That might take a minute to get used to but how interesting! Thank you. I never heard of ambient mode earphones.

I'm always jealous when my husband or kid gets a set of earbuds because they sound great but I never felt comfortable enough to use them.

[ - ] GloryBeckons 4 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 14:42:08 ago (+4/-0)

Yeah, for some reason they don't advertise the ambient mode nearly as much as the noise canceling. Or at least don't explain it very well. I only found out when I pressed the button by accident, after months of using the headset.

[ - ] Peleg 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 20:33:43 ago (+0/-0)

That's too funny!

[ - ] uvulectomy 2 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 14:30:37 ago (+2/-0)

Just be aware that some people can't tolerate active noise cancelling (and you really don't know until you try a pair).

If you can't, you can get a set of 3M Worktunes for like $40-$50. Oldschool passive isolation + bluetooth headphones. I use mine when I'm mowing and they work great for that. Fantastic battery life, decent enough sound, etc. And if you're just using them in the house, you can probably leave whatever device they're connected to on a table somewhere if you're on the same floor. The range is kinda ridiculous. I've had mine stay connected in the garage when my phone is on the other side of the house.

[ - ] GloryBeckons 2 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 14:47:34 ago (+2/-0)

Really? What bothers them? Do they hear the NC, or is it just that the "active silence" is unsettling?

Best to try before you buy I guess. The good ones with active NC are certainly not cheap.

[ - ] uvulectomy 3 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 14:59:16 ago (+3/-0)

IIRC, it has something to do with the lack of low-frequency ambient noise. That causes your brain to think the air pressure is changing, so it emulates feelings of pain or discomfort to encourage you to pop your ears. But since that doesn't change the lack of low frequencies, the pain can just get worse until you turn off the noise cancelling.

[ - ] GloryBeckons 2 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 15:33:28 ago (+2/-0)

Fascinating. I can see the similarity... it does kind of feel like air pressure changed for a second.

[ - ] Gowithit 3 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 13:48:25 ago (+3/-0)

I'm so bad on the shoes part! Whose blog was it fly lady or living on a dime where they said even if you are not leaving the house put a pair of shoes on because you are more inclined to get things done if you do.

I play the music out loud never headphones because I need to hear if anythings going on .

I have an acquaintance that wears headphones while grocery shopping and I couldn't imagine leaving myself vulnerable like that.

[ - ] NeedleStack [op] 3 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 14:00:26 ago (+3/-0)

Fly lady says to be fully dressed while at home in case you need to run out for anything. I don't subscribe to that because I much prefer to be in my comfy clothes like pajama pants or sweatpants/shorts when I'm doing my chores.

Jeans/pants are too constricting for all the bending and kneeling and squatting you have to do throughout the day. Skirts'/dresses' fabric would swoosh all over the place, potentially getting dirty and you often have to hold back the material from flopping into your mess. But wearing comfy shoes totally rules.

Edit: I'm with you on the wearing of headphones. I don't wear any out in public for the same reason (vulnerability). I like to be totally aware of my surroundings and situations.

[ - ] NukeAmerica 2 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 17:20:57 ago (+2/-0)

Pro tip. Stop using old ass appliances that are so loud you need fucking ear plugs, mine is quite. 😌

[ - ] NeedleStack [op] 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 17:47:47 ago (+0/-0)

I'm jealous. I hate this thing. I can't switch it out though because we don't own this place. Can't wait to move.

[ - ] paul_neri 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 19:27:08 ago (+0/-0)

No. Your appliance is...quiet [Voat Editing Service].

[ - ] NukeAmerica 1 point 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 21:18:03 ago (+1/-0)

God paul I can't wait until the vax kills you.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 2 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 16:32:29 ago (+2/-0)

If your dishwasher is in good shape, you can leave it. I do it all the time. Mine is watertight, and it won't open unless you pull it. Doesn't open on its own.

What is super bad is if you accidentally spill and don't notice, say, oh by leaving the dishwasher open with the door over a spill. Then the acid water or whatever from the dishwasher dissolves the coating on your wood floor, leaving behind a green sticky mess. Then "someone" has to refinish the floor.

[ - ] Robhere 2 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 14:45:03 ago (+2/-0)

sounds like you need a new washer. I have a BOSCH and the only reason I know it is running is it has a light that shines on the floor when on.

[ - ] NeedleStack [op] 1 point 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 17:11:46 ago (+1/-0)

Wish that I could but we're renting this place right now.

[ - ] big_fat_dangus 2 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 14:19:05 ago (+2/-0)

The dishwasher will always take 20mins longer than you remembered. Thinking "I'll just throw some dishes in to wash then start dinner after" is always a mistake.

[ - ] Peleg 1 point 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 20:41:00 ago (+1/-0)

We had a dishwasher once that really sucked.
If we were home it would run just fine, but every time we turned it on and left the dang thing would Leak!
I threw that piece of crap away!

I find the thought of a female padding barefoot around the house kinda sexy. Just sayin'!

If it's too loud, you're too old.

I put in foam ear plugs while I do this to minimize the annoyance. I don't recommend blaring music in headphones to combat the noise because you'll definitely create long-term ear damage.

I have closed over-ear full-sized blutooth headphones with active noise canceling for this. It works even for mowing the lawn.

I have a pair of sneakers I wear indoors only for housework.

I've a set of full slippers for this. Well, that and keeping my feet warm on the wood flooring.

[ - ] HeyJames 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 18:29:23 ago (+0/-0)

Well well that is the house cat life. I spend most of my waking hours wearing heavy high top boots and around loud sites with huge heavy equipment. Different people have different experiences, but such is the beauty of life

[ - ] Gowithit 1 point 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 18:45:18 ago (+1/-0)

#Me too! Well barefoot but it's still loud sometimes and some things are kind of heavy...

[ - ] Anus_Expander 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 16:43:46 ago (+0/-0)

'long-term ear damage', lol

What

[ - ] NeedleStack [op] 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 17:13:09 ago (+0/-0)

What, should I have written "chronic"? "Permanent"?

[ - ] Anus_Expander 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 17:16:36 ago (+0/-0)

lol, you thing headphones are AC-DC concert volume levels?

[ - ] NeedleStack [op] 1 point 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 17:44:36 ago (+1/-0)

Oh, brother. You've got to be putting me on. This is what I'm talking about:

"It’s definitely possible that listening to loud music through headphones can cause hearing loss that results in tinnitus — but it’s more the volume at which you’re listening to music (or other audio) through your headphones that you need to be concerned about than the headphones themselves."

https://www.everydayhealth.com/tinnitus/can-constantly-using-my-headphones-cause-tinnitus/

"The problem with headphones is that people tend to listen at high volumes. When you exceed safe listening levels for too long, your hearing will suffer. And tinnitus happens to be a common side effect of hearing loss."

https://www.soundguys.com/can-headphones-cause-tinnitus-59488/

"According to the 2021 study, approximately 1.7% of people worldwide experience noise-induced hearing loss. The study reported individuals who use headphones in an already noisy environment are at a 4.5-fold higher risk of hearing loss."

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/do-headphones-cause-hearing-loss

[ - ] Anus_Expander 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 18:11:18 ago (+0/-0)

I've been listening to high-volume music for 50 years, on a near-daily basis. My hearing is fine. Genetic weaklings MIGHT have problems, but we need them removed from the gene pool anyway. PS: I currently play in a gigging rock band at least once a week.

[ - ] paul_neri 2 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 19:30:28 ago (+2/-0)

That places you at about 60 yo imo. What are you doin' hanging out with us young dudes ffs! Go back to your giggling rock band playing at the old peoples'home!

[ - ] Gowithit 2 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 19:47:58 ago (+2/-0)

I read giggling too at first!

[ - ] NeedleStack [op] 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 18:20:14 ago (+0/-0)

Cool.

[ - ] HeyJames 1 point 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 19:06:42 ago (+1/-0)

I wouldn't listen to him. Hearing loss is a big deal. I know some older guys who can barely hear and it's hard to communicate with them

[ - ] paul_neri -1 points 1.1 yearsMar 23, 2023 21:28:28 ago (+0/-1)
