True that, dependent upon the sources that you read, they will focus on the fact that he was very happy giving away other peoples money(which is certainly true!), but if you look at the circumstances of the time, and why he was so popular, a lot of it makes sense.
He was the flamboyant "Trump", yet the anti-capitalist Sanders(give away others money), so I am not really sure what that makes him. He definitely was corrupt, but more so than FDR?
At the same time, ordinary Americans were still reeling from the Great Depression, and seeing the Oligarchs at the time living high on the hog, many of the same individuals that were purveyors and owners of the Federal Reserve.
I find it interesting that they called him a fascist, populist, right & left wing. To me, I think he was probably more of an attention starved whore, who in theory was not very good, but may have kept us out of the war, thereby changing all history thereafter? I guess we'll never know on that.
This is an interesting article about him, but at least he was openly corrupt:

Parnells’ is an excellent critique of HPL. Foo-foo just doesn’t understand the context of the desperate times occurring in Louisiana and all over the nation.
Let's put it this way... The only reason why you know who FDR was is because he came from a family of rich politicians and rode Teddy's name into office. You only know him because he became president.
Meanwhile, name a single governor from the depression era from memory... Nobody remembers governors. But, you know who huey long was because despite only being a governor, he outshone FDR in his crookedness.
As do a lot of other Huey P Long bridges span locations across the state. And he built US highways. No wonder he was a hero providing jobs to Depression poor Louisiana.
I remember driving into town with my uncle many years ago. My uncle pointed and said “ see that man? My dad let his family live on our land. He didn’t have any clothes until he was 13.” We’re talking dirt poor during the depression.

Reminds me of DeSantis in the above. All politicians are liars and thieves. So, there is that.
