Some sources claim the number of registered voters is closer to 200 million. That would put voter turnout at around 75% - still very high in a country where it rarely reaches 65%.

Good question. As multiple other people have posted, the census bureau shows 168-169 million registered voters and 154-155 million votes counted. That's over 90% voter turnout - pretty insane on its own.

The sources I saw stating near 200 million were news articles and may have just been a journalist pulling a number out of his ass.

Registered to vote and citizens over 18 (otherwise presumably eligible to vote) is where the discrepancy arises.
The larger number includes people that are not registered/ homeless/ and felons etc

The way they report voter turnout is misleading, however. Rather than $NUM_VOTES / $NUM_REGISTERED_VOTERS, they calculate it as $NUM_VOTES / $NUM_ELIGIBLE. And they count anyone over 18 as "eligible."

So if there are 252,274,000 people eligible to vote, and 155,000,000 votes cast, they list that as 61.4%.

In reality, there are 168,308,000 registered voters. So 155m votes out of 168.31m gives you an actual turnout of 92.1%.
