Elevating your bedmaking (video is on a youtube mirror)

You don't have to buy expensive sheet sets like Porthault of course but getting cotton or linen ones and a proper duvet or wool blankets and/or cotton patchwork quilts will do wonders.

Tips not mentioned in this video:

Vacuum around your bed more often as well for better sleep.

A trick I learned to freshen your mattress a couple of times a year is sprinkling about a cup of baking soda on a stripped mattress (on laundry day of course) and let it sit for as long as your laundry is going. The goal is for the powder to soak up/neutralize any odors on the fabric. When it's time to make the bed, vacuum up the soda and also vacuum the sides of the mattress (paying attention to all the seams where dust settles in). Vacuuming your mattress every now and then will help in the meantime.

Open your windows for a few minutes each morning (even in winter) to allow fresh air into your home too.

I grew up poor. After getting out of the military my apts and eventually my house were decorated 'functionally'. When I got married and my wife moved in she was into 'Martha Stewart'. Frilly things everywhere, throw pillows on the sofa and all the chairs. At least a combination of 10 pillows on the bed, with duvets and bed spreads. I finally had enough and explained that it no longer felt like 'home', but a decorated showroom that was only meant to looked at and not used. She's toned it done some, but I still throw the pillows off the sofa. At first she complained, but I just asked her 'aren't they THROW pillows?

Decorated functionally sounds way better than minimalist.
My place is functional.... I like that. Thanks.

I agree. I kinda got swept up thinking I should go minimalist or go with the spare Scandinavian look but it's so not me. I love my collection of items that make my home cozy and artistic. The key is to have a place for everything and to stay tidy and clean (not dirty and cluttered).

As a woman, I’ve always thought that a shitty thing to do to a man.
What dude wants to look at pink lace and frills in every room.

Omg so many ladies around here lately! This is starting to look like a trend!

[ - ] NeedleStack [op] 2 points 1.2 yearsMar 5, 2023 17:35:02 ago (+2/-0)

I hope it keeps up. I'm guessing women who realized feminism is a fraud are seeking hanging out with like-minded ladies in obscure sites like this where they can say whatever they want.

I was around on voat and I do remember this sub. A bunch of women left after the Rittenhouse trial and I feel the site is a little worse off. I think it helps to have a right wing feminine perspective.

I dont think it had anything to do with the Rittenhouse trial. More to do with blumen and his porn and system defending him and firing cynabuns.

Good on you.

I like the spirirt of this thread but, like you say, a lot of it will come down to the personal preferences of your family members.

E.g., I'm too tall to have the feet of my bedspread tucked in. Having the sides tucked in also feels constrictive but just discomfortable rather than painful. Stacks of pillows are just useless clutter to me--when visiting, I store all but the one I'm going to use on the floor. I'm not going to remember the colors on the walls or on the bed. You don't have to impress me but the way to do so via bedding comfort would be with memory foam or Sleep Number tech. I probably would remember the four-poster. I'd rather install a heat/energy recovery ventilator than open windows in winter. Etc.

Some of the vacuum / baking soda tricks sound neat.

Sounds like she followed along with what she was told was 'homey' and 'classy'. Having so many pillows is such a throwback. I hope she figures out and develops her own personal style instead of appealing to authority.

Pillows. Pillows everywhere.

Have you heard about that whole Marie Kondo thing where now people are mad about her messy house?

[ - ] NeedleStack [op] 4 points 1.2 yearsMar 5, 2023 12:40:46 ago (+4/-0)

That's hilarious! I did read that she has allowed herself to be 'messy' at times now that she has kids. I didn't know there was a backlash though. I love it! Please tell me all about it lol.

I did read her first book and followed its methods and it didn't really help. It did not address why I was holding onto things. Of course anyone who can't let go is going to say everything 'sparks joy'! Stupid.

The one decluttering lady who DOES hit on why we hold onto things (and how to let go) is Tracy McCubbin. She's awesome and it bugs me that she does not have anywhere near the fame and fortune Marie does. Her book "Making Space, Clutter Free" is the best.

[ - ] Gowithit 3 points 1.2 yearsMar 5, 2023 13:32:30 ago (+3/-0)

My kid was telling me about the Kondo drama so I don't know too much about it. I'm sure if I go into those threads it's just going to be a whole bunch of women patting themselves on the back for not cleaning.

I haven't heard of Tracy Mccubbin before. I'm proving your point for you ha.

I did like Marie's folding technique though it helps when space is an issue.

My problem is the opposite of what those ladies offer help with .

My favorite hobby is throwing things away and I need to work on saving things for those just in case reasons.

Speaking of books about cleaning. My daughter bought that one "parody" book by messie condo called tidy the fuck up and I only flipped through it and got mad at her because the whole book is the author motivating people using cuss words.

I couldn't believe she paid money for a book when I've been doing the same thing for free for years.

Kids....

Marie's folding method rules and I do still follow it. That Messy Condo book sounds clever but of course they had to go all degenerate with their swearing. How obnoxious.

allowed herself to be 'messy' at times now that she has kids.

How could you not be messy with kids? Every time I visit family it's crazy. The women clean up and I turn around and the kids have toys and whatnot everywhere. Not to mention the dog hair.

Open your windows for a few minutes each morning (even in winter) to allow fresh air into your home too.

I have a box fan with a jew-mart $5 air filter duct-taped to it's intake side that I set in the front door's screen-window blowing inwards(using a cut cardboard piece to fill in the gap on the side) and open up the back door leaving the screen door closed. This keeps bugs/animals out/in and airs out the place nicely.

sprinkling about a cup of baking soda on a stripped mattress (on laundry day of course)

I'm going to try this. The mattress is getting older now.

Man I like my cheap $15 Kmart fleecy.

You may keep it, I promise!

I don't think I have the 'frilly house' gene. The warehouse/storage/workshop look is pretty comfortable, as long as there's a comfortable chair or sofa.

You don't have to be married to want to have a clean bed. Interesting though, how you associate anything in this post with your relationship woes.
