Enunciation is important

submitted by TheViciousMrPim to whatever 1.2 yearsMar 2, 2023 05:20:37 ago (+25/-0)     (whatever)

Being lulled into a sense of complacency is totally different than being lol'd into a sense of complacency. This may seem a frivolous thread, but speaking clearly is important. Not only will your message be received as intended, you'll sound smart(even if you're not so much).

And remember kiddies -

Grammar is the difference between "Helping your Uncle Jack off a horse" and "Helping your uncle, jack off a horse"

... Until next time!

The more I look at your examples I feel it should be 'Helping your uncle Jack, off a horse.'
But will gladly admit if I'm wrong.

[ - ] EAT_MY_ASS_FUCKFACE 1 point 1.2 yearsMar 2, 2023 09:20:41 ago (+1/-0)

They're all wrong, it's just 'helping your uncle Jack off a horse'.

It looks stupid because of the now known phrase, but you don't add a comma just to prevent misunderstanding; a comma doesn't belong there.

Change the name to "Bill" & it's fine. Poor example, & simply an unfortunate wording.

Edit: Fucked up the capitalization. Yes, If "jack" is lowercase, it becomes a completely different fucking sentence.

Correct - appositives and direction of precision. If you move from imprecise to precise, generally you don't use commas, e.g. "your uncle Jack" moves from imprecise - "your uncle" - to precise - "Jack."

But if you move from precise to imprecise, you set the appositive apart by commas, e.g. "Help Jack, your uncle, off a horse."

Unless of course it's your name, e.g. "John the Baptist" or "Joan of Arc." But what would any grammatical rule be without exceptions?

Thanks for the heads up and education.

A comma indicates a pause in what you're saying as far as I'm aware. As for capitalising Uncle to indicate my uncle called Jack rather than the action jacking off I could be wrong there but it felt correct so fuck ya it stays.

What about
Off of a horse?

[ - ] EAT_MY_ASS_FUCKFACE 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 3, 2023 21:14:07 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah, I can off a horse; might take a couple shots, though.

[ - ] Irelandlost 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 2, 2023 10:22:26 ago (+0/-0)

That’s not a great example as the comma isn’t strictly necessary. I prefer to use the difference between “let’s eat out, grandma” and “let’s eat out grandma.”

Whoa.

[ - ] i_scream_trucks 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 2, 2023 13:19:34 ago (+0/-0)

It is necessary because without the comma it reads identically with no pause. It would just read like the same thing twice. I do like your example tho

You know what else is important? Proper grammar and orthography.

Those that argue their ideas are more important than proper spelling and punctuation, are missing the point.

If you don’t use clear and precise language, you are more likely to be misunderstood.

I agree and confess I'm pretty lazy about that when it comes to internet comments.

[ - ] Thyhorrorcosmic103 3 points 1.2 yearsMar 2, 2023 05:55:32 ago (+3/-0)

Nobody’s perfect.

I am pretty damn close, though.

you snore

Well, you were. Then I walked away.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 2, 2023 14:13:41 ago (+0/-0)

There's also the time/effort needed for all of that. An official report will get more time/effort put into grammar/etc than an internet shitpost will.

Only in Clown World will someone get lol'd into complacency. Helps when it comes with a free red nose!

[ - ] dulcima 2 points 1.2 yearsMar 2, 2023 07:42:24 ago (+2/-0)

There are days when I want to do nothing but loll around.

[ - ] BoozyB 1 point 1.2 yearsMar 2, 2023 07:57:47 ago (+1/-0)

Precise terminology is also important. Shortened words and colloquialisms should be avoided, such as loll, when you should be aware that the proper word is lollygag.;););)

[ - ] SumerBreeze 2 points 1.2 yearsMar 2, 2023 05:28:00 ago (+3/-1)

But the latter (loled) is actually more precise - that is, in describing how someone is lulled into said complacency; the former requires more information, whereas loled confirms that it is through humor that people are hoodwinked.

Thats a moo point

Do I correct this or are you carrying on the joke.

It's 5am and too early for this shit...

Ahh that's funny! I was really bemused!

[ - ] dalai_llama 1 point 1.2 yearsMar 2, 2023 13:25:45 ago (+1/-0)

Funny. I lulled.

[ - ] solomonpapermaster 1 point 1.2 yearsMar 2, 2023 11:17:51 ago (+1/-0)

I'm actually fluent in 3 languages. I work on phone. You are absolutely correct. I some times feel native speakers are worse than my 3rd language. It makes me think they're dumb. And my 3rd language (French) is not even close to my second one (English) let alone my first one (Spanish)

[ - ] con77 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 2, 2023 16:28:01 ago (+0/-0)

I visited Miami once. I was conversational in Mexican dialect. they pretended that they couldnt understand a word I said. Hola! Cubans are enorme culos!

true story from back in the day. as a navigator on a USCG ship I worked on the bridge. a part of the job was making ship wide announcements on the 1MC (speakerphone). I would use absolutely perfect enunciation when I did it. It drove people nuts.

I would have thanked you for doing so when using a PA device
