I've been to a couple of places in Europe where there were areas just for pedestrians. I found it enjoyable, cozy, interesting. Basically, instead of centering your buildings and shop-fronts around streets and parking lots, you have a large area cordoned off from cars and promotes walking and that goes into the urban design from the start. It's healthier to walk more, it's interesting, and definitely different from US urban design.

Making a city walkable is actually pretty nice. Making it so you have to walk isn't. Making it so you have areas where you can only walk is... kind of nice. Making it so that all of your stuff is in "walk-only" areas is bullshit.

Converting a country that is centered around driving is going to be as fucked up as trying to switch to metric.

First sane take I have seen here. It's design for car ownership being optional. One of the biggest poor taxes is needing a car to survive. Changing infrastructure is going to be a major challenge. The car lobby has had regulatory capture since the 40's or so.

It's design for car ownership being optional.

It's designed for control. They are already charging people for leaving their designated 15min zones in certain areas. It will only get worse.

Where? Are the zone borders in map apps? How do they know which zone you are from?

Mmmmm, IIRC it was a few stories from the... UK?..ish? Some pilot program they were feeling out about 3-4 areas. There was plenty of jewy waffle to distract from their exact plan but it was plainly obvious when they had already started gaining revenue from people who left their plantation too many times.

How do they know which zone you are from?

How do you think? They know where everyone lives, what they buy, who they talk to, where they work, what they do in the evenings, and even when/where they shit. Big data and sophisticated algorithms can work wonders for the (((communist))) police state we live in.

I was looking for concrete evidence. All you are offering is conjecture. Changing zoning norms, which I can prove are what this initiative is through public record, is so that you have to travel less to get things you want or need. There are no zones for people. If you want to leave your "15 minute zone" you move for 16 minutes.

Why are you advocating for this communist trash? How long is your nose?

Lived in an area zoned like this. I didn't have a car for 7 years and didn't care there to. There was not a reason. I saved so much money. The point you are missing is the lesser reliance on a depreciating asset to live.

That was the original design intent of the malls in the US. But those got kiked up

Totally agree.

Most cities started out with limited transportation options, but adapted to the new technologies. Now it is impossible to go back.

What will be the rules on deliveries? Will Amazon drivers have to load their own deliveries at their borders? LOL.

I'm surprised there hasn't been insane backlash at this from the workers, although I suspect this is something new to the US. If the employer has the employees by the short hairs with health care - how will the employers treat the employees when both healthcare and housing are under their control? LOL.

"You can't quit. I'm the only employer in this zone LOL. Good luck never working again since you can't move."

How would they do this in an existing city without tearing everything down? If you were starting a city from scratch it might be doable, but I wouldn’t want to live there. I like living in the forest, away from all the sprawl.

When I play City Skylines, the only kind of metropolis that doesn’t fail are a bunch of pod communities around a downtown where the jobs are. Can’t imagine all these Illuminati fuckers playing City Skylines.

Are they going to put a wall around and keep you in unless they give you permission? Like in China.
