A lot of us are really handicapped by our inability to realize that our sense of disgusting towards certain forms of behaviors is imposed upon us by society.
For most of history nobody have a shit what you thought about niggers or kikes. Now it's something people are aghast about if you say the wrong thing. Moral disgust or reprehension is socially conditioned. At least it is for a large part. I'm sure there's the opposite case as well, where we are okay with things we've been socially conditioned to accept where without the conditioning we would be strongly disapproving, like circumcision, for example. Our emotional responses are to a large part the result of the people around us, or at least how we perceive them to be.
I think unpleasant experiences are an integral component of human existence and therefore should be considered mandatory for citizens of any state. Without the unpleasant we have no yardstick to measure quality. Without a measure of quality we have no ability to discriminate. I would loath an existence without discrimination... Wouldn't you?
I think that a lot of what we find to be unpleasant, even abhorrent, is the product of our modern culture, and that people living in older civilizations would not be offended by the same things we are.
I think that a lot of people who use an appeal to emotional sentiments regarding the issues being discussed are acting like the guardians of the status quo, they view the sensibilities of today as if they were a historical constant rather than a recent occurrence.
I think little Albert in eh minster study had proved thw point that strong emotional and moral reactions to things are programmed into us by society. We take offense to outrageous or controversial things because we are are made by society to do so. If society were different, these taboos would be as well, and the thing which we regard as offensive, outrageous, or controversial would be different.
