I found that story a few years ago.
It’s actually pretty incredible, and super sad.
As bleak as their life seems, the shear horror they avoided out there is amazing.
But then just with the introduction of salt and other food into their diet, they almost all die right away. Hard to believe they never went back out to find that remaining woman, or her remains.

If they had only managed to bring another one or two families with them, they could’ve thrived out there.

Agree with everything you wrote. It really is one of the most intriguing stories I ever read.

It’s like some kind of analogy for the balance between self sufficiency and community.
As unlikely as it is you can make it without the herd, in the rare case you do, exposure to the herd can become an immediate death sentence if not done right.
