Microsoft is trying to force the always-online Windows 11. Get one foot out the door with linux-based Steam OS. It already runs tons of desirable software.

Valve needs confidence that there is demand for what they're producing. It might be worth buying a steam deck if you're on the fence and have money to spare.

Cinnamon was a pleasant surprise. It's basically A non-homosexual version of GNOME.

Not if you're using it.

Well I don't, so the statement stands true.

What is gnome?

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 28, 2023 23:34:07 ago (+0/-0)*

It's a Desktop Environment for *nix kernels (or DE for short). At the root of things, a base install of BSD or Linux don't come with one installed, but most distros bundle one or more as options, such as GNOME, XFCE, KDE, etc., or even lighter weight, command prompt-focused Window Mangers (or WM for short).

GNOME along with KDE are the big two DEs. KDE used to be a bloated, candied looking mess and GNOME was seen as better, especially with 2.0. Now over a decade back, GNOME 3.0 dropped and was gay as fuck, changing its UI to a form that looked decidedly like a mobile platform or reminiscent of Windows 8. Cinnamon is a modern fork of GNOME that retains the old 2.0 look and feel, hence "non-homosexual". I think it's unique to Mint because their team developed it, but I don't see why you'd be unable to install it on other distros. Ironically, KDE has gotten steadily better over the years and given up its heavily web 2.0-inspired look.

Just try them all and see what youblike

I can't be dicking around too much. It's bad enough on w10 when I have shit to do I have to hit the gas.

It's already a challenge to hunt down old files from here or there. I can't be having my os clunk through basic tasks, like dark souls clunks through combat

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 3, 2023 23:12:26 ago (+0/-0)*

There are many distributions that make installation and use a real snap these days. My picks for a newbie would be Linux Mint w/Cinnamon or Manjaro w/ KDE.

They'll both offer similar experiences to Windows, and both (especially Manjaro) can run Windows apps and games pretty well with modern compatibility layers.

Edit: You owe it to yourself to at least set up a virtual machine within Windows 10 to try out an install.

[ - ] osomperne [op] 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 8, 2023 22:42:41 ago (+0/-0)

You owe it to yourself to at least set up a virtual machine within Windows 10 to try out an install.

understandable, but do the hypervisors really get proper access to hardware though? i've always had a problem where they don't use it properly and i can't test games or more complex programs, and that's just a no-go

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 0 points 1.1 yearsMar 9, 2023 00:06:22 ago (+0/-0)*

Yes. As long as you give yourself root access only when needed. nix systems have no qualms about you mucking about the kernel or messing with low-level access. Part of the philosophy is "you break it, you fix it".

Edit: Just realized that you may be referring to virtual machine access to hardware. In that case it's pretty dependent on the VM in question. Pretty sure the latest iterations of VMWare have it to some degree, but I think the only ones with true GPU passthrough are built for either MacOS or Linux. Alternately, you could always partition a drive and set up dual boot.

If gaming ability is important to you, then Manjaro is
definitely* the distro you should be keeping an eye on; it's based on Arch Linux (known for its bleeding edge rolling updates and compatibilty layers), only MUCH more newbie-friendly than Arch proper.

Unless you need some weirdo random shit for work or something mint ran out the box 100% functional for me.

If you ever update the kernel and things go weird like usbs not working turn the comp off at the wall and back on again and itll fix everything.

Don't ask me why but it just does.

Maybe a bit more than marginal tech skills required but VMs are awesome safety valve for dealing with occasional bullshit Judeo-corpocracy app that won't run on an open source OS or which you don't trust near real hardware. Hell, you can even run Android in an VM for apps you don't wanting to have basically unsupervised access to an always-on connection to a network.

Best VM in your experience?

And just like that Edge stops working for more than 3 tabs and gives a pop-up at launch that it needs to run on Windows 10 or 11 to receive updates.

It's like that exact same kind of antitrust class action back in the day wasn't enough for them to correct their attitude towards customer rights.

The versions of Linux you guys are posting are all cucked. Devuan is much better. If you're a n00b try peppermint devuan.

It's as easy as mint or steam, but not cucked with systemd.

The versions of Linux you guys are posting are all cucked.

Why?

Devuan is much better.

Again, why? Genuinely curios.

The Futureā„¢ my ass: This is 1960 "Time-Sharing"

Starring - Rented DRM running on backdoored CPUs and BIOSs. Your "data" held hostage to monthly ~~ransom~~ 'subscriptions'.

My home router blocks all m$ domains. It takes port 53 traffic, blocks it from leaving the wan, and forwards it to dnscrypt. If a android phone with private DNS on or Firefox with doh (DNS over https) connects it gets blocked. Router has a ip list from github with all the known doh resolvers. Believe it or not this includes Google's 8.8.8.8

Check out opnsense sometime. Place consumer grade router/spaceship in bin and buy a Chinese qotom box. Never look back. Cheers

So this works great for the 1 game that everyone in my household plays that only runs on Windows. I want to slit my wrists every time at tax season because 100 years later the 1040 form with fields still does not have a proper PDF application to handle it in Linux. Linux is where I get my work done.

[ - ] winners_history 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 26, 2023 10:24:07 ago (+0/-0)

tax season

Yep. I just did taxes yesterday on an OLD Windows 10 SSD I plug in to my desktop every February since 2016. As soon as I get evidence the IRS accepted the return, the SSD goes back in a drawer until next year.

Some people just won't use Linux or BSD no matter what. If you must use windows, the best bet is to buy a grey-market key for a Server version; MS reserves telemetry spyware and bloat for individual consumers of the base OS.

Not saying it's perfectly safe and there are probably back doors, but it's better.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 1 point 1.2 yearsFeb 25, 2023 00:50:01 ago (+1/-0)

Can you run Steam on a regular linux distro? I don't fancy having the machine do only gaming.

[ - ] La_Chalupacabra 1 point 1.2 yearsFeb 25, 2023 11:14:25 ago (+1/-0)

I hear a lot in the forums about Proton to run Steam games on Linux.
Must be... something if it's getting that much mention.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

[ - ] lolxd 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 25, 2023 01:57:56 ago (+0/-0)

I'd say most regular Linux distros yep, the Steam Deck runs on Valve's own version of Arch Linux.

[ - ] HunkasaurusRex 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 25, 2023 02:30:03 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah you can, I've been playing AAA stuff on Manjaro/Gnome for a few months now with no issue -- new build, 7900x CPU 7900xtx GPU

[ - ] winners_history 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 26, 2023 10:14:08 ago (+0/-0)

nvid are still being wankers

Yes

[ - ] osomperne [op] 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 28, 2023 20:37:05 ago (+0/-0)

Pretty sure it does more than gaming

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 28, 2023 20:40:10 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah, but I don't want my machine for other things running some wacky distro. I don't know anything about arch. I would use a debian based distro.

[ - ] osomperne [op] 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 28, 2023 22:28:36 ago (+0/-0)

Being that steam made it, it is outside the definition of "wacky"

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 25, 2023 20:05:45 ago (+0/-0)

I recommend using Ultimate Edition Arch Linux. It's easier to install than the usual Arch Linux distro and you'll get ability to use any apps you like with it's ability to convert packages. If you want a .deb package use debtap -S [package name] and it converts it to an Arch installable package. A gamers edition is being created now and will soon be released. https://ultimateedition.info/

An ISO is available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/ultimateedition/files/ultimate-arch-2022.12.31-x86_64.iso/download

[ - ] The_Reunto 1 point 1.2 yearsFeb 26, 2023 11:02:26 ago (+1/-0)

Neat, any compatibility issues with the debtap conversion?

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 26, 2023 19:06:53 ago (+0/-0)

No they work fine as long as the dependencies are installed. I installed some apps using Flatpack from Flathub and they're working really well too. it is recommended that you use the apps from the Arch AUR, if they have what you are looking for, before converting or using Flatpack.

[ - ] HunkasaurusRex 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 25, 2023 02:26:46 ago (+0/-0)

I built a new gaming PC a few months back and run Manjaro with Gnome, everything works pretty well right out of the box. Windows can kick rocks, my leisure PC is finally a relaxing experience
