Actual hunter gatherers are not sporting. They poison arrows so even if you hit the animal with a sharpened stick, you'll be able to get him. Poison arrows are also convenient for firing at human enemies.

Bow and arrow first, I reckon. After watching your 4th meal for the week run into the wilderness like a spastic pin cushion on speed, you're gonna say to yourself "there has to be a better way".

Neanderthals used spears (no evidence ever found of bow and arrow) so my guess is they poisoned spears first.

Maybe you would poison something like a mammoth with a thrown spear so that it's less dangerous delivering the killing blow with a spear.
