Advice for getting experience as a carpenter if I can only work nights and weekends?

submitted by Lovemachine to AskUpgoat 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 15:13:23 ago (+5/-1)     (AskUpgoat)

I'm already an IT professional and I make enough to get by. But I want to learn how to build houses.

Craigslist has no night and weekend carpenter positions.

How can I still learn more about carpentry or at least the trades in general if I can only work nights and weekends?

Not looking to get pigeonholed into one job. I'm looking for a more broad education.

My carpentry education came from an X tank commander and drill sergeant, who retired from the military, decided he wanted to di carpentry, got some books, including the Army manual, (maybe Navy), and taught himself, then went into business for himself. He did everything by the book, and that's how I learned from him ... by the book. He even gave me his books.
Learning was serious and by the book !!
Best learning experience I had in life.
Better than welding school, machine shop work ( machining), masonry.
Get some good books on carpentry and framing. Try and get on a framing crew. You'll see all the other phases of construction, from footings to roofing. Learn it all.
Books can help Actual work will be enhanced by what you learn.
Get the Thomas J. Glover Pocket Reference Manual.

Remember, the more you know, the easier it will be to sell yourself, which is a very important skill in itself.

Ex form carpenter checking in, Same as above. If you really want to get good you're not going to do it while doing IT on your day job unless you're willing to do it for 12 years to be semi-proficient.

He's better off taking a wood shop class at a local CC to learn the basics, then doin weekend projects in the garage while Wifey is on Tinder sexting niggers

The amount of hazing you will undergo will not be worth it. I can’t even begin to explain it. (Coincidentally when the women and minorities complained that they were discriminated against it was just normal hazing.)

Framer here. You really need to quit the faggy IT job and dive feet first into the trades. I say nigger as much as I want all day.

You've never had a hobby before?

[ - ] Lovemachine [op] 1 point 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 15:17:59 ago (+1/-0)

Not doing framing carpentry, no.

[ - ] FacelessOne 2 points 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 15:25:42 ago (+3/-1)

Google videos, buy a book, practice on projects at home until you're confident.

Sounds like you want a teacher to train you on how to become a contractor. In your spare time.

I used to love framing. Its gonna be pretty hard to find a night gig. all you can do is ask around.

If you want to build hobby horses youtube videos and stuff are just fine.
If you want to build a house that will pass inspection you can either give up your day job and become a carpenter apprentice, or give up the idea of building houses.

There's a shit ton more to building houses than nailing 2 2x4's together.

You might be able to find a 2nd shift manufacturing job but those tend to be full time only.

[ - ] chrimony 1 point 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 15:24:05 ago (+2/-1)

Just watch YouTube videos and build a shed or something. Or start even smaller and build a workbench. You do live in a house, right? Living in an apartment would be a shitty place to start moonlighting as a carpenter.

Try to find those volunteer home building events - although they might have limited locations

Then either go watch or ask to learn and talk to people about it.

I've done some work with habitat for humanity. I wouldn't do it again, it's basically building free houses for niggers.

Craigslist, youtube, etc

considering the IT market right now it may not be a bad idea to learn new skills. start with whatever you know and build from there.

[ - ] JustALover 0 points 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 16:20:56 ago (+0/-0)

Figure out what you need to build. Watch some videos. Try what you saw in the videos.

At the very least you'll be needing a drill/driver, tape measure, pencil, saw of some kind and something with which to measure square. My favorite is a speed square.

Which saw? I think one can get by on a jigsaw to start with.

[ - ] texasblood -1 points 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 17:58:48 ago (+0/-1)

Electrician or Welding is the super field/jobs of 2023 and forward.
My 19yr old grandson is 4yrs hands on and doing $3800+ a week with boarding expenses paid when traveling.
Been stacking dimes since he was 15 on his dad's truck.
Fuck all that board-banging bullshit

[ - ] SkullFuckerSupreme -2 points 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 15:23:25 ago (+0/-2)

Watch YouTube.

Buy tools.

Get a fucking carpenters belt.

If you are full time IT faggot you won't be able to handle real carpentry.

Sounds like you like the wage more than the work... And that means you are useless to any good carpenter.
Here's your training lol.

Judgemental much? Just FYI you're wrong about pretty much everything so I hope that brings you down a bit. Why do you default to a shity attitude?

[ - ] Anus_Expander 0 points 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 16:07:58 ago (+0/-0)

Only showoff faggots wear toolbelts

[ - ] zongongo 0 points 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 16:33:58 ago (+0/-0)

Showoff faggots are the ones that Don't wear toolbelts !
Princess.

[ - ] Anus_Expander 1 point 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 16:41:24 ago (+2/-1)

Nigger, I've been in the trades 35 years. Without fail, the most incompetent dipshits clank around with 50 pounds of tools on their belt, while the guys that know what they were doing (me) have 2-3 tools in their pockets, or in a 5 gallon paint bucket. I have seen it a million times. The guy that clanks around with hammer, cordless drill, 5 chisels, 10 screwdrivers, 5 pairs of pliers, a 30 foot tape measure, etc etc etc has the biggest mouth, does the least amount of work, and has the lowest standards. Closet faggots desperately trying to be butch. See also 'Harley riders that bolt chrome and black leather shit to their bikes'.

[ - ] Just_me -1 points 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 17:13:12 ago (+0/-1)

And union carpenters who don't mind making 50 trips for tools needed from their bucket. My experience with guys with the huge belts was usually big and/or fat guys who wanted the least trips, bendovers, and trips up or down stairs or ladders. Almost always dropping the tools from their pouches.

[ - ] Just_me 1 point 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 17:51:27 ago (+1/-0)

Knew the union comment would piss one of you idiots off...stick to the commercial work putting metal studs up for a hospital, and leave residential stuff alone

[ - ] SkullFuckerSupreme -1 points 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 16:45:16 ago (+0/-1)

So where do you put your Oreos and other snacks?
The belt is a key safety measure.
This way..you won't accidentally starve to death on the job.

[ - ] Anus_Expander 2 points 1.3 yearsFeb 21, 2023 16:52:42 ago (+2/-0)

I fuckin HATE Oreos, how anyone can eat that nigger shit is beyond all comprehension. I work without breaks, then go home when I'm tired. I eat around 6pm.

At 57, 6-7 hours is just about right. Zero debt/alimony/car payments/etc. Life is good.
