The reason Google requires libraries to shred the old books they scan...

submitted by Sheitstrom to whatever 1.2 yearsFeb 21, 2023 10:42:36 ago (+37/-0)     (whatever)

Is so they can constantly change the online version at will exactly like 1984 (which I am sure, itself, will be re-written to praise fascism).

I always wondered why shredding of the books scanned was required by Google for payment to libraries... Now I know it was to make oompa-Loompas into trannies.

Edit: some great explanations re: book binding etc. but it still sits a bit uncomfortably to me. Some of those old almanacs are getting kind of rare, many are very hard to replace.

Seems weird.

You scan Tom Sawyer then shred it, but I still have a copy that talks about Nigger Jim.

It's probably due to needing to cut the binding off so the pages lay flat for scanning. After that, no modern librarian is going to go through the effort to re-bind the book. So they just send it off with other broken/worn/ripped books for recycling and simply order a new copy.

and simply order a new copy

...and gets the edition "for modern audiences".

Makes sense.

Most libraries have book binders, and you can get your own book rebound cheaply.

Which tells you a lot about librarians and their willingness to spend your money.

They have scanners now that can image the book the way it is and compensate for the distortion caused by the pages not being flat.

Tell that to the 45 year old fat librarian using a 20 year old machine.

These are (from what I've seen) even easier. Push button, turn page, push button, turn page, etc. etc.

It uses a laser to project a line across the page just before the image is taken, and the software works out how to skew and rotate the image based on that. All the user has to do is flip pages and press the button.

I'm sure they could afford them with (((Google))) money. But of course the goal here isn't preservation, but eliminating physical history.

the library doesn't have the original it scanned from, though!

Google, change 1984 to praise *fascism?*

Seems implausible. They'd be much more likely to change it to praise marxism!

Pinterest started a huge fad of turning old books into lamps and atrocious "sculptures".

Don't throw out your old books, especially those encyclopedias and dictionaries.

Second hand bookstores get targeted for redevolpment a lot

Second hand bookstores get targeted for redevolpment a lot

I can't think of a business that makes less money.

EBay vendors do $8k+ a week selling old books online.
Their brick and motor business is all real estate investment value.
My Websters 1828 bison hide dictionary is priceless

Exactly right. Even thrift shops seem to barely be able to sell their books at rockbottom prices. It's hard to even give away books these days.

Somebody else got mad about it because you can also run a side hustle selling rare books on eBay.

What the fuck is wrong with you? Fascism was the greatest form of governance ever created by man. It looks like they already did a number on your retarded ass.

After they get all the books they approve of scanned they will implement a new version of "firemen". AKA Fahrenheit 451 to destroy all the printed versions.

Who runs google? Who runs the other online bookstore? And what happens after WW3 when the dust settles and a group of people emerge from underground with knowledge of everything on servers while the rest of us small minority of scattered pockets of peasants try to make bows and swords? They will finally rule the world in their fantasy way.

They are probably shredding only newer books that aren't very valuable.

Don't trust any book written after 1830
