1. The feds changed the date of his trial without notifying him in order to fabricate grounds for an arrest
2. Once he became aware of this he concluded (correctly) this wasn't a situation he could get out of by complying and having his day in court. They were clearly not playing fair.
3. The initial exchange of fire didn't happen on his doorstep. This wasn't some suburban development with nice clear cut front and back gardens. His son was out walking their dog with his friend a long distance from the house. They had no reason whatsoever to suspect there were feds in the area.
