My grandfather was a drunk his whole life. It ruined his marriage but he was never anything but an unapologetic drunk so you could never say that he wasn't doing with his life what he wanted. He lived to 80 and is was actually the gout that did him in in the end.

Anyhow I recall stories -- he was a great story teller -- of him getting pulled over on some country road so pissed he couldn't walk -- don't know how he managed to drive -- but the cop just told him to go home and sleep it off.

Not defending him, but it really was a different time back then.

He had a great story of one of his dogs -- he was a hunter, all the farm boys were back then -- a big lab named Mike. He and some buddies were at the beer parlor one Saturday afternoon. Mike liked to sit on the chair with his front legs on the table. Someone signaled for another round and when the frazzled bartender came around he hurriedly plonked a bottle down in front of everyone, including Mike. It was my Uncle Len's turn to pay and he looked at the dog and then drunkenly exclaimed while pointing "I'm not paying for HIM!!!"

I must have heard that story, told with endless embellishments, 100 times over the years.

Cops actively seek out DUI's not because of safety, but because it is a huge revenue stream for police departments, jails, and probation offices. A first offense for having a BAC of .02 will cost you upwards of $10K assuming you don't fight it.

If you fight it and win you still end up paying $5k for an attorney.

Obviously, drunks don't belong on the road... but 2 beers at a checkpoint costing you thousands of dollars is clown world highway robbery shit.
