I'm a long time Linux user... for servers. Desktops were always Windows, at work because of Office and Photoshop and because any hardware is going to have a Windows driver. And at home it was because of gaming. I also got a VR headset when those were all the rage and it only worked under Windows. That headset was pretty cool but it only took a few months before it no longer held anyone's interest and we sold it. So it was just games.
I'd hated Windows since forever and had always keenly watched the gaming on Linux scene. Every few years I'd dutifully install whichever distro was the current darling and jump through the hoops necessary to game. And I was always massively disappointed. Even the much vaunted SteamOS was limited and finicky.
And then about year ago I installed Pop!_OS on a whim. The DE was literally worth changing for, but how good was the gaming experience? Happily it was good. Very good.
So I've been 100% Linux at home for more than a year now and not a single regret. If I was into on-line games the story would not be as good and since many players today mostly play MMOs and the like it means switching to Linux is going to be a challenge still, but last I checked progress was being made there too.
So yeah, if you're skeptical then I know where you're coming from. But the current state of gaming on Linux is almost certainly better than you think it is. And if you don't think that getting out from under the yoke of MicroSoft and the increasingly controlling environment that is Windows is not a huge relief then you really have something great to look forward to. Trust me on this.
Personally I switched to Linux back in 2003 or so. I'm also gaming on Linux, but I mostly play retro games, so I'm not exactly missing out on anything.
Back then I was using Debian. Now I am using Mint with i3wm. Been meaning to switch to Artix, but Mint works well enough for everything, so I kinda stuck with it.
