Conservatives keep fucking up here and there because they are emotional.
The first part where he mentions that he has a soul was relatively harmless, but it was unnecessary, and should not have been included. It was only a minor fuckup though.
The part I highlighted was much larger, he said the purpose of his research was "to stop children from being mutilated", meaning he's admitting that he's reading the data not to discover anything, but to justify some agenda of his.
He's admitting he's biased and operating on the basis of achieving some desired end, not acting as a neutral champion of the truth.
His last move was awesome though, and it made up for the two fuckups.
He was misquoted as saying that he thought people were adults at 16, when he was saying that historically people were considered adults at ages as young as 12 or even 8 years of age (mostly based upon very superficial or pragmatic standards, such as what they were physical capable of, such as boys being able to properly assist their fathers in their work, and markers of sexual maturity such as girls having their first periods).
He corrects them that it was not only an old quote but taken out of context, treated as a prescriptive statement about what should be the standard in the present, rather than descriptive about what had been in the past.
He gives a definite age of adulthood at 18, and then opens up to the possibility that it should be advanced to the age of 25 given the more recent advances in scientific knowledge.
Then he turns the question around in them, asking then at what age they would consider someone capable of making the decision to physically "transition" themselves.
These congressmen are terrified of making a definite statement, to hold to any position is to root themselves to it, taking a solid stance on such a controversial issue is potentially a poison that will ruin their political careers forever.
Remember, these establishment career politicians don't have positions, they have goals, they have careers, but hey do not have a solid stance on anything. Especially anything that is particularly contentious. Doing so means that if the cultural favor shifts against the position they've taken, it becomes the vulnerability that every one of their colleagues will use against them once it suits their careers to do so.
Democracy is a pathetic joke of a political system.
