I'm considering buying a case of booze

submitted by WhiteGoat to TellUpgoat 1.3 yearsFeb 5, 2023 20:44:32 ago (+7/-0)     (TellUpgoat)

I rarely drink alcohol, but I feel like booze will be a popular mean of trade when the fiat reserve note goes to zero.

I did that. But then I drank it.

Now I need to restock.

Bevmo just sent me a coupon for $20 off if you spend $150 or more. Looks like I'll be spending $150 on alcohol.

That's pretty easy to do.

Find one that doesn’t run on electricity. Most of those look like they do.

Coffee. Stock up on coffee now.

Good call. Also, tobacco.

Anyone with a still, some kind of sugar/starch and yeast can make booze.

Depending on where you live, growing tobacco might prove to be considerably more challenging.

There was a fellow that wrote a blog about how he survived the Bosnian war. He said booze, lighters, and silver were all high value trades.

It will be very valuable. Hey stuff that is popular fir your area and some stupid strong stuff for non drinking uses

I have a case of vodka (sterilization) and a case of whisky (trade) for exactly the same reason. I’m a teetotaler.

Why vodka and not isopropyl or stronger ethanol beverage like Everclear? Knowing you, there's a good reason.

[ - ] lord_nougat 1 point 1.3 yearsFeb 6, 2023 13:34:56 ago (+1/-0)

Because he can drink the vodka, pretending it is water.

I was basing it on cost, but my calculation was pre-“quintupling of currency supply” that happened in the last three years, so it’s probably totally different now. I’d re-run the math if I got another case today.

Tools might be better? Crow bars, pry bars, bolt cutters... ? Also semi durable goods and supplies? Rope, chain, hardware, winches, buckets, wax, gas, axes, tarps, lightbulbs, lighters, fertilizer... guns and bullets too if you like to keep your shit.

forget cases of booze

build a still and grow sometihng you can distill into booze.

[ - ] Tallest_Skil 1 point 1.3 yearsFeb 5, 2023 22:44:16 ago (+1/-0)

Potatoes, of course. You can live on them alone for… well, long enough, too.

[ - ] i_scream_trucks 1 point 1.3 yearsFeb 6, 2023 03:28:25 ago (+1/-0)

That would be the best option.

Chips and vodka.

Part of a complete breakfast.

You need enzymes to convert that potato starch to sugar.

[ - ] observation1 1 point 1.3 yearsFeb 5, 2023 20:51:50 ago (+1/-0)

There are websites that will teach you how to distill it. You can buy Costco sized bags of sugar and distill that

The UJSSM recipe is good and easy. It gets good after the third generation of using the backseat in each batch.

You can also do pure corn, but then you’d need enzymes to convert the starch to sugar for the yeast. Corn is a pain in the ass to work with though.

And so after you've traded your last bottle for couple potatoes then what?

Better to buy the equipment necessary to build a still and teach yourself how it works.

If you can get through the starvation economy and into the survivor economy, it’s still a plus. 60 days? 90 days?

[ - ] Tallest_Skil 0 points 1.3 yearsFeb 5, 2023 22:44:43 ago (+0/-0)

It’d have to be much longer than that to effect any actual change.

[ - ] Lordbananafist 0 points 1.3 yearsFeb 6, 2023 00:09:20 ago (+0/-0)

Yea but a closet full of hooch can get you through.

I think we’re talking about an apocalyptic scenario here right? Full collapse.

Yes, alcohol, weed, tobacco, things like that, we need to be able to make our own.
One thing that I am having a hard time finding is a well bucket. I have a very good well on my place. I need about a hundred feet of rope and one of those well buckets, but those buckets are hard to come by. If you do find one they want an arm and a leg for them and they look like they are made from the cheapest crap they could find!

Edit to add: Maybe I should start a business making them!;)
