That's the way to do it as far as it goes. Threatening the POTUS is a top tier crime. Threatening to blow up the local post office doesn't get as much publicity or renown.
He is talking about revolution in that video too. Also good. But in that kind of scenario he needs to strike as hard as he can with the first punch. Because he is going to jail. He also needs the proper ideology which he evidently lacks. So along with threatening the president he needed to do things like make a video wiping his ass with the constitution in pursuit of the ethnostate and shoot as many Mexicans as possible. All in quick succession before the cops arrived. Or something like that.
Then there is the matter of him pleading guilty. The utility of this depends on age, health, and prospective prison sentence for crimes one is planning to commit. Generally if it's a guilty plea you intend to get out. And in that case as a felon your life is basically fucked. In that case if the system comes for you - and it has - you come for the system. Strike hard, strike deep. Do as much damage to the system, given your means and abilities, as possible.
In reality the government's understanding that you will go on the warpath if they come for you makes coming for you at all cost prohibitive. That is if you don't commit a crime on the level of his or a violent crime.
Then there is the matter of turning a trial into a spectacle. Are you Charles Manson? Ask yourself that... then consider the implications of trial in this political environment in the US.
Edit: this trial issue deserves a lot more discussion. Interesting also that this place goes down for hours right after I made this post.
