I'm working at a new customer overnight again and the title is what I had a young man say to me while I was assessing if he'd be a good addition to my team on this project. I probed further to give him the benefit of the doubt, he could be in a bad mood:

Process school for plastics is an associates degree after 20kUSD and sixteen months in a classroom. Walk out making 55k as a starting wage. I did the same thing for electrical school; spent 20k and 16 months to make 45k starting. Now I'm in business for myself and work around four months of the year, rest of the time is on the homestead.

I dusted off my teaching material, made him a 3" binder on basic electrical & metallurgical knowledge as well as a S.M.A.W. (stick welding) course module. The reason is we think he deserves a solid chance but we won't waste ourtime training a mouth breathing rod burner, we're training pros or not bothering. He has written exams I'll be giving him and continued training is dependent on his mastery of the trade, not just a few tasks. It's high time to bring back the mentor/apprentice model.

But by the sounds of it he was clearly trying to express that he believes he will become competent more quickly in a work environment through kinesthetic learning and hands-on mentorship rather than in a post-secondary education system through academic instruction by teachers that are likely not current or themselves competent in the field. The point of mentorship is to ease a worker into risk, where the initial consequences for their mistakes are minimal until the mentee learns from them sufficiently and they can slowly be assigned more complex work.

Find someone who is knowledgeable at your workplace and able to transfer those skills to others and pay him to train a few guys on probabtion at once, giving them only work they are capable of at each stage and supervising them closely so they don't make costly mistakes. Would probably end up much quicker than 16 months and the work will be directly applicable. I don't know if it will be cheaper but it might be, and at least they will be somewhat productive for you during training which you should cost in rather than paying them to be to elsewhere where they might spend a lot of time on bookwork they don't remember or non applicable skills or learning irrelevant shit.

I didn't have to take any electives. I tested out the one math class (algebra) because that shit is easy and I already mastered it long before I finished high school. What elective classes do trade schools have now? I know my schools curriculum is still the same.
I had to take a government elective and a liberal arts but granted this was for a full degree not just the cert. For the certificates I have it didn't require that just a simple math and English along with the usual. The degree actually required a math that had trigonometry in it and that kind of thing.
No dual associates but this trade school was associated with a university so there's that. Funny enough a lot of these electrical classes had some advanced level I/O device and PLC troubleshooting but what I find myself doing most often is just tracing shorts and testing resistance. Granted there is plenty of device and switch/relay troubleshooting throughout the year but not as common as just good ol fashioned chasing the ghost.
That makes sense since it was linked to a uni, mine is a stand alone school.
I only started using plc knowledge in the last four years but I am a nerd who can't help but figure out the ladder logic and write down how I think it works. Then you have to troubleshoot and debug the system...

A lot of people in my field aren't educated. Myself I have a university degree and a few technical certs. All that did not teach me much. Learning in the field taught me the most but honestly OEM training taught me a lot too.
You can always tell when someone is uneducated at those trainings though. They're usually on their phone and don't pay attention. I had to read a bunch of really really dry electrical stuff for my degree so one thing it taught me was to pay attention and how to digest complex topics

I have no college experience and I work in a field that is fully trade based. I work in an area in that field that is highly tech driven. Working with robotics technology of all different types. We hire mainly younger people because it's easier to train them and we don't have to deal with bad habits that can cause major money loss to a customer.
It is common for us to hire 7 people and 4 to 5 of them end up being worthless.
They don't want to work or put the time in to scale. They don't want to work in the elements. They don't want to put in the extra effort to make it work. Yet they want the raises, they want an easy ride.
They make comments like "How are you able to own a truck like that" then get upset when I remind them I have been in the industry for a decade and paid my dues.
They don't understand the gold mine they have at their finger tips and how incredibly lucky they are to have been given a job in this section of the industry which has the potential to set them up for life.

There is plenty of really well paying jobs out there. The bigger question is. How much are you willing to push your self to get to that level.

No certifications needed. Most of the "dumb kids" We attract actually have college degrees. A good portion of them have formal training that pertains to some of the robotics systems they will be working with. Just no formal training within the industry.
It isn't like we don't pay them for their worth. Most of them start between 70 and 80k a year. Within 5 years if they stick with it they can easily be making 120k and it keeps going up from there the longer you stay with it and the more specialized you get.

We do not require any training. We just attract people who went to school for some of the equipment we use. It's seen as romantic and as a "Cool" job.

I dusted off my teaching material, made him a 3" binder on basic electrical & metallurgical knowledge as well as a S.M.A.W. (stick welding) course module. The reason is we think he deserves a solid chance but we won't waste ourtime training a mouth breathing rod burner, we're training pros or not bothering. He has written exams I'll be giving him and continued training is dependent on his mastery of the trade, not just a few tasks. It's high time to bring back the mentor/apprentice model.

My boss always though I was too hard on people and didn't want to put me in charge of HR... until he dug himself into a hole by shoveling issues forward and being too nice with bad staff just to avoid vacant positions. Then he started paying the price. Some employees were ambitioning on his easy going attitude, not paying back advances or doing work hours they owed the company, making their own schedule, talking on the phone during work hours, 15-20 minute bathroom breaks (phone in hand). Then he finally got pissed and let me shake things up, too late though but I didn't mind really, I had accumulated enough frustrations with some of the guys that it felt good to come out swinging bootcamp style. Then my boss finally understood the importance of ruling with an iron fist covered in a velvet glove, this young generation cannot be given an inch of leeway because they simply haven't been taught professional ethics and assume the company owes them something right out of the gate.

It's threads like this that point out everything that's wrong with society these days. I think there was fundamentally a communication disconnect between yourself and that young lad. But by the sounds of it he was clearly trying to express that he believes he will become competent more quickly in a work environment through kinesthetic learning and hands-on mentorship rather than in a post-secondary education system through academic instruction by teachers that are likely not current or themselves competent in the field. The point of mentorship is to ease a worker into risk, where the initial consequences for their mistakes are minimal until the mentee learns from them sufficiently and they can slowly be assigned more complex work.

Find someone who is knowledgeable at your workplace and able to transfer those skills to others and pay him to train a few guys on probabtion at once, giving them only work they are capable of at each stage and supervising them closely so they don't make costly mistakes. Would probably end up much quicker than 16 months and the work will be directly applicable. I have no college experience and I work in a field that is fully trade based. I work in an area in that field that is highly tech driven. Working with robotics technology of all different types. We hire mainly younger people because it's easier to train them and we don't have to deal with bad habits that can cause major money loss to a customer.
It is common for us to hire 7 people and 4 to 5 of them end up being worthless.
They don't want to work or put the time in to scale. They don't want to work in the elements. They don't want to put in the extra effort to make it work. Yet they want the raises, they want an easy ride.
They make comments like "How are you able to own a truck like that" then get upset when I remind them I have been in the industry for a decade and paid my dues.
They don't understand the gold mine they have at their finger tips and how incredibly lucky they are to have been given a job in this section of the industry which has the potential to set them up for life.
The younger generations have absolutley been failed by their parents.
There is plenty of really well paying jobs out there. The bigger question is. How much are you willing to push your self to get to that level.

It isn't like we don't pay them for their worth. Most of them start between 70 and 80k a year. Within 5 years if they stick with it they can easily be making 120k and it keeps going up from there the longer you stay with it and the more specialized you get.

This kid could've been offered a job at the same building making almost double his current wages, with him getting bonuses if he stays for an entire job (usually six months, sometimes a year). I garuntee he won't last more than two months working where he is now, I see people in the plastics industry cycle through constantly and he fits that type.
I can't control the world, but I can control myself. I pay myself last, and due to my homestead life I don't need much money. I only have to pay for things I can't make or grow, like a cell phone for example.
