I think the problem is the fact that he kept saying, "take yer swing". That's technically provocation and removes your self defense standing in some situations.

In Texas, mutual combat is a thing. It’s especially important here not to provoke because it can be assumed that mutual combat was declared. That’s when the use of deadly force can get you into trouble because mutual combat is basically limited to a fist fight. Essentially what I’m saying is that running your mouth can get you into a mutual combat situation instead of a self defense situation. I’m not a lawyer but that’s how I understand things.

In the end, it was a bunch of dumbass rednecks being stupid and the dudes with guns could have easily walked away. I don’t know the whole story though.
