Complicit: helping to commit a crime or do wrong in some way. He was complicit in the cover-up

I am posting this because I confused complicit with complacency. Others may do the same.

It is complicit because you can only feel offended by someone else's words, if you allow yourself to be offended.

Reminds me of Marcus Aurelius.

Both are considered great Stoics of history.

I think personal attacks are pretty much illegitimate ipso facto. I think rude behavior in general is too. And that includes witty barbs intended to provoke laughter or mock. In person especially it is little more than an indicator that an asshole has quick wits. But he's not smart for doing it. He's just a quick witted asshole.

I can occasionally feel stung by a well put together argument. But that is very rare here. And it is deliberate. The point is to prevent constructive conversation from even taking place.

I see it as recognizing that if you feel stung by the comment then it is good to explore what made you feel that sting.

If it is something that is true, and you have the ability to change, then you should work to do so because you recognize the truth of the statement.

If the statement is false then the attackers foolishness is something worth mocking.

If the statement is true and cannot be changed then simply smile at the dim witted arrogance of your foe.

Yes.@sirrantsalot once accused me of virtue signalling. I wasn't on the occasion in question but the language I used made me sound that way. Anyway...I engaged in a bout of introspection and arrived at the conclusion that I did virtue-signal IRL and it had got me into several messes. Virtue signalling is not necessarily bad if it encourages good, albeit confected, behaviour.
