Just looked into z.lua; that does look handy. That could potentially save a lot of time.

I feel like if bash is available then probably so are some other shells so do what you want. If you want maximum compatibility in scripts, you probably have to write for compatible sh. I don't see a shiteload of non-Linux UNIX systems any more outside of Mac though.
