An old backpacking trick: Bring soy sauce packets. Drink one in the morning. It'll make you thirsty and the electrolytes help with hydration. It's like concentrated Brawndo.

Because, if you are hiking, you are sweating, if you are sweating, you are losing salt.
If you don't have salt in your body, then your cells can't regulate the amount of water that enters and exits cells, so at that point it doesn't matter how much water you drink, the pump is broken.

However if you read the article, you will see that it is the elevated sodium levels that kill.
So the same thing could be said about anything with salt content.

The funny thing about soy sauce is, from what I understand, it is the only soy product that isn't estrogenic. Something about the fermentation process does that. Not sure we're I read that though.

Too much of anything can kill you
