I genuinely wish to know when and why gold stars started being used as psychological validation for children. Of all the things to pick it was gold stars.
Because that has always been a thing in white societies! Medals were stars and made of gold. Sheriffs wore stars made of gold or a metal that looked like gold.
The weird part is why kikes were made to wear gold stars instead of a red pentagram, or those funnel hats, or a noose around their neck.
I'd only done one or two picture books when I was approached by a publisher to illustrate Julia's first story [A Squash and a Squeeze], in 1992. Other illustrators had already turned it down – possibly because it was in rhyme, which was unpopular at the time. But at college I'd always been taught not to turn things down, and I liked the philosophy behind it, which was based on an Eastern European Jewish folk tale.
While I was a student, I did an exchange in New York: Cooper Union Art College for three months. These drawings are of Jewish immigrants, meeting for coffee. It was 1984, so many of them were still alive; refugees from Germany or Austria. I heard them speaking German, so that’s how I knew.
Why would a supposed (((English))) woman know about an old jewish folk lore from Poland and then also have enough interest in making a children's book about it? HMMM.
