I've done a lot of free-diving and encountered many octopus and squid. Nothing scares me more than they do. Not because they are outwardly dangerous, but because how intelligent they are. They really do try to communicate with humans.

See, I would be the dumbass that would try and play with them.

Depending on how calm you are, you absolutely can. Several have swum right up to my face and done some weird shit, in shallow AF water, not even evading my reach to them.
There is a pretty cool film about a guy in SA who documented his relations with octopi, called "my octopus teacher" or something like that.

"That's right human, look at the cute little octopus in the eggy sack. As soon as I hatch I'm coming for you, infesting your brain with my eggs and you'll be the host of a breed of octopi that will bring about the destruction of your species and all that dwell on land."
