I think that it has a place as a redundancy feature. That is why they made sure to design it so that it wasn't redundant (most people's solar panels won't power the house if the grid is down).
I don't have any, but I would think of it like a generator. Yes, a generator is a massive rip off to buy to power your house, but when you need it it is nice to have.
