Reporting in on eggs in Canada.

submitted by OriginalGoat to whatever 1.3 yearsJan 23, 2023 20:51:09 ago (+16/-0)     (whatever)

Just bought 2 flats for 3$CAD/Ea. 60 eggs for 6$CAD (4.49$USD). As usual we're behind the times.

Will eat 50 eggs tonight while I still can.

There’s no egg shortage, just price fixing.

I saw a video a few months back where a farmer was explaining that the egg buyers weren’t paying enough for the the eggs so that farmers could sustain egg production. Prices of feed and just about everything else have gone up but the income from the eggs didn’t. But then the sell price of eggs at the store has gone way up. If that dude wasn’t full of shit then there is definitely something fucky going on.

Just picked up my eggs from the farmers market. I have an egg subscription of sorts. I pay $25 a month for a dozen free range eggs per week. They're all a different color. It's wild. I like to drink two raw eggs in the morning before work. It's easier and cleaner than cooking them.

When I raised hens, I always went with a variety of birds that laid different colored eggs.

As long as you're going through the trouble to care for them, why not make it that much more fun and visually appealing?

I get green, white, tan, brown, bluish-grey. It's so cool. They all taste the same when you drink them, but I actually think the lighter colored ones taste better cooked

Ive researched raising quail. They are good little layers. Their eggs are about 1/3 the size of a chicken egg. You dont need much room for them and they dont make too much noise. Could be an alternative to chickens if SHTF or if egg prices continue like this. I dont really like buying mass produced eggs anyway and god knows what they feed them.

Do they shit everywhere and destroy the grass like chickens?

[ - ] Belfuro 1 point 1.3 yearsJan 24, 2023 00:40:48 ago (+1/-0)

If this is a problem. Get ducks.
Ducks eat insects but don't dig up gardens or eat veggies

Ducks are cool, huge eggs and lots of them.
Ducks do however shit everywhere. Wet nasty stank squirts all over the place and every pond has to be changed regularly. They are a foul fowl, no joke about it

Yeah I deliberately left that negative out lol.

I raised pekking ducks.

Had to drive them to stay out by our lake. Too much shit.
I just ended up preferring chicken eggs
Beautiful birds though.

Probably

They tend to scratch the ground like chickens so yes, just on a smaller scale. You'll have to make an enclosure for them since everything eats quail, including rats. Their eggs are too small to cook in any other way except boiling.

Also, I've yet to see a truly flightless breed of quail so their enclosure either needs a low roof that they can see, or it needs to be a flight pen. While I haven't seen it personally, I've been told multiple times if they can't see the roof, or it's not high or low enough, they can and will break their necks trying to fly out.

I hate grass; I considered this behavior to be a benefit.

But there IS still shit everywhere...

Are people really financially affected by a $5 increase per week in eggs? Kind of depressing really

[ - ] PostWallHelena 13 points 1.3 yearsJan 23, 2023 21:43:00 ago (+13/-0)

Some are but thats not really the point is it? Its death by 1000 cuts. Its the economy on kikes.

[ - ] HeyJames 0 points 1.3 yearsJan 23, 2023 22:28:33 ago (+0/-0)

Buying healthy food is a cost I'm willing to bear. Guess it does not affect me because I buy eggs from healthy chickens and meat that isn't all fucked up as it is. Those prices were always high. Still a very small portion of my income

[ - ] Gowithit 2 points 1.3 yearsJan 23, 2023 21:58:45 ago (+2/-0)

When you make most of everything by scratch for more than 2 people for all meals plus some snacks those eggs go quick. To buy 1 dozen is laughable. I shoud have been freezing them. I knew it was coming but who wants to really believe one day that case of eggs you used get at 8 would now be 20?

[ - ] OriginalGoat [op] 3 points 1.3 yearsJan 23, 2023 22:13:41 ago (+3/-0)

Yeah, my family goes through about 20 eggs/week. Kids are still small, that number will increase over the next years.

[ - ] Gowithit 2 points 1.3 yearsJan 23, 2023 22:22:17 ago (+2/-0)

Its crazy . They so know what they are doing. I ran out of everything at the same time about 3 weeks ago. Flour, sugar, yeast, eggs, and both the baking "bros" . I was cutting into my backups to save on the groceries ( bad idea) and I price compared. It was cheaper to buy the already made processed versions of what I was going to make.

I went with the cheaper options because Im an idiot and quickly remembered that frozen pretzels are literally cardboard.

Yeah. Used to live on a strict budget. "Do I eat, or get gas to go to work?" Been there.

I don't eat eggs, as I find them absolutely revolting.

Live in south western ontario, be surrounded by mennonite farmers. 36 eggs for 12$.

[ - ] ItsOk2bArian 0 points 1.3 yearsJan 24, 2023 00:56:35 ago (+0/-0)

If you think eggs are expensive, try buying chicken feed. Unless you can buy it by the pallet load, you're paying the same or more. I hear people bitch about the price of farm fresh eggs at the farmers market all the time, chances are the farmer is barely braking even much less making any notable profit.

Unwashed eggs can be brined.

Not so much store bought eggs.
